When people insult me, I have a few well-worn (shopworn, some might say) lines of response.
The classic shit-test insult label (express or implied):
“You’re being an a$$hole!” (..being inconsiderate, selfish, smart, rude, uncivilized …)
“I’m also an asshole!” “I am sometimes inconsiderate” (etc.)
The pick a fight insult:
“You stupid pr~ck”
“Is that a compliment? You’re trying to pick me up with that line?” (good with targets as well as competition – esp. wannabe alphas who want to confront because finesse takes more time and skill; also good with drunks, confuses them.)
My general approach is to be guilty of everything (GOE) immediately and effortlessly, with anyone who tries to impose guilt on me. I’m guilty of causing the war in Iraq, and I’m also responsible for world hunger, and Bush being elected, etc.; you can only be a tool of guilt if you resist being guilty. I’m also guilty of everything good, heh. (In any case, this is consistent with my radical pantheism, since god is responsible for everything.)
Guilt and shame don’t have to be explicit – a “What do you do?” with a certain bitchy tone of voice can be an attempt to impose guilt or shame or otherwise lower value.
“What do you do?” (bitchy tone)
“Are you sure you’re not asking me ‘WHO’ I do?”
(* at a later point, you can re-affirm “Usually, what I do is less important to me than the quality of the people that I do it with.”*)
But I typically resist all labels and nominalizations as much as I can (negative and positive):
“You’re so smart!” (awed tone, obvious ego stroke)
“Well, I’m smart sometimes, but I can’t be smart unless I’m with someone who’s also smart enough to appreciate what I say.” (* this looks like a return compliment but Ain’t Necessarily So *)
What’s this got to do with pheros? I notice now that when I have a fresh dose of A314 on, I’m almost 99.99% accurate in “return of service” – batting any sh~t-test insult or label back to the court where it came from. And I haven’t had even one case of someone offering me a “let’s fight” insult in the last four months since I began here…
