Reject passivity

I thought they were Army Rangers

But yeah, I wouldn’t doubt a Marine would ever let anyone get past him.

I honestly feel that this boils down to just being passive or aggressive. Leave out religion and leave out scenarios. Being too passive and/or too aggressive BOTH can have there drawbacks. I guess you could say as male it would be nice to be on the opposite half of the scale(more aggressive) and women on the other(more passive) for a more “natural” scenario in evolutionary standards.

But in terms of “alpha” look at people who are extremely passive(outwardly) and have been great MEN and LEADERS. Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, and MLK(Martin Luther King)

I just think if your at either end of the spectrum, completely passive or completely aggressive, this can be bad no matter who you are. To me the closet you can get to the center of these types of behaviors/spectrums the more you will benefit yourself and society.

I believe as long as I DECIDE what my decision is going to be(passive or aggressive in nature) than I am in control of what directly effects me. You can’t save or help everyone in this world. Learning the hard way is just how some people need to learn

While I appreciate the vote of confidence it has taken me many years of self-discovery and application of knowledge, many mistakes and so much passivity to get to where I am today.

I believe we have a personal obligation to attempt to dissuade others from taking a bite out of a poisoned apple. I would actually further that and say we should knock the apple from their hands if we knew it would effect them badly. Just like we wouldn’t give a teenager car keys when they were drunk! Is that control? Absolutely. We make decisions for others that are very controlling all the time. Is it wrong to control someone about to bite into a poison apple? I would say its wrong not to take control and allow someone to get hurt. Lessons learned are important, but there are other ways to learn lessons without having to experience it first-hand.

Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, and MLK(Martin Luther King): NONE of these men were passive. They were non-violent, not passive. They stood firm for what they believed in. I think you might be confusing violence as a stand-in for aggressiveness.

I think we are all talking in extremes. Of course if someone is going to hurt themselves you should step in however I dont think Josie was referring to that when he was talking about letting his wife make decision’s and passively letting her do it. I think…no I know if she was about to drink drano he would not react passively.

However there are other decisions in life that only the person on thats life’s journey can make. We can voice out opinions and urge them to our way of thinking but its not our decision. Ultimately its always our own. In a relationship where two people make a commitment to partner neither should be passive in decision making. Your together to help and support each other on your combined journey.

Of course I would not let my kids drive a car drunk but I have also taught them to follow there own instincts and there own paths. Not the path someone else thinks is right for them or the path that everyone else is taking.

Adam and Eve is a story told to teach a moral and those type stories are always taught best in extremes. Lets say for religious sake that there is truth to it, many stories are born of some truth. Eve was not going to die if she ate that apple. God wont choose between good and evil, right or wrong for you nor will he excuse you if someone else makes that choice for you. He gave you free will to choose. If he doesn’t wield that power over you what makes any other human think they are Divine enough to wield that kind of power over someone ?

The only time that passivity is detrimental is when your passivity has a direct result upon your path. That’s the passivity people need to let go of not the need to lead control and tell others what is right and wrong for them.

This is a great thread!

I saw this story on the news yesterday. It’s such an amazing/extreme/timely example of the exact opposite of passivity, I wanted to share it.

“I’m not a hero and maybe it was foolish of me to get involved but somebody had to do something.” - Ann Timson

The courageous 75 year old Granny takes down the robbers, SOLO :open_mouth:, then everyone else comes runnin’. Well, at least they gave her a hand after the fact.

Now this woman has got religion!

Bella (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/02/09/i-just-kept-swinging-says-hero-gran-who-clobbered-six-raiders-with-her-shopping-bag-115875-22909440/)

That granny runs like a guy LOL Never saw a 79 year old move that fast before.

Either that or balls

Tish

Awesome video! love it. She sure can run though.
I like this thread too. (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/02/09/i-just-kept-swinging-says-hero-gran-who-clobbered-six-raiders-with-her-shopping-bag-115875-22909440/)

Josie, I decided to pass on reading most of the thread since its derailed into arguments on religion. However, I can see where your coming from and its something I too am working on in my own life…I just call it trying to be a better man.

I am a huge fan of John Maxwell who is considered the leadership expert and he’s a preacher. I grew up in a very religious household and while I do believe in a higher power I don’t believe in “religions.” However, I have the John Maxwell leadership bible which uses the bible to help illustrate the points he makes in all of his books. And in that bible, it talked about how Adam was the first to fail at leadership because he did not step in and stop Eve from eating the apple.

I find myself in so many ways just sitting back and passively watching as the world goes by. I realized I’ve been passive in a lot of my relationships and as a leader at work. My current relationship with Steeler Girl which is going on now 4 months, while its not serious I know exactly what it is she’s looking for. She’s not looking for a daddy for her boys, they have one. She is looking for a man that will step in and provide leadership to a family that has been lost for quite some time now.

In some cases I step in and provide that leadership, in others I sit back and watch quietly because and this is an excuse, “I don’t know exactly how I fit in at this time.” Which is bullshit. I cite the vague boundaries as a reason I’m not acting instead of just manning up and establishing my own boundaries and coming from the mindset that I am the Captain of my ship and I know which direction it is headed in.

Thanks for posting this. I would love to find a good men’s group in town. I have some great male friends, all very alpha types but they are so busy its hard to get us together…we men need that feedback from other men.. and its something I’ve lacked for a long time now.

Yep, not passive at all.

b r i l l i a n t!

Test caps lock

WTF…

I’ve had that happen when reporting on certain things and it made it lower caps.

IF I WANNA TYPE IN ALL CAPS I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO (<all caps)

Thx! I like how this derailed from religion into typing class LOL

Sorry I just read this post. I wasn’t receiving emails from pherotalk. At least you see the need to be held accountable along with other men. I honestly had no clue that I needed that until I joined. These guys are very busy too, that’s why we meet at 6 am. The thing is, men used to just get together and be men. They used to go hunting, camping, or whatever. They used to call each other out when they were being punks trying to dominate women. We used to kick each others asses when we were being lazy. Now we like to be entertained.

Yea this wasn’t meant to be a religious thread. I too don’t believe in religion. That’s something that is man made.

I’ve got my buddy Jim who anytime I’m feeling the need to adjust my attitude I’ll call him or text him. I’ll lay out the entire situation to him and be 100% honest and then sit back and let him rip me a new one if I’m being a dumb ass.

I shouldn’t say buddy, he’s my best friend and I do the same for him. If I’m being a wussy, or a needy douchebag he’ll let me know..whatever..we don’t hold back. Just life has caused us not to really be able to get together as much as we loved to, go riding our bikes etc. :frowning:
