I still don’t understand what Americans call Punk. I would call this Psychobilly, definitely. But nowhere near to what I call punk or original old school punk. In Oz we used to laugh at what was promoted as punk from here no offense, just sayin’.
Yeah, but keep in mind that the particular song that I linked there was made in 1958, just 3 years after a greasy haired young truck driver named ELVIS hit the scene with ‘That’s alright mama’. Pretty fierce track for being made just when rock n roll was getting started.
Hasil Adkins stuff was pretty nuts too.
When it comes to pure punk though, I generally think of stuff like Black Flag, Fear, The Ramones, Generation X, The Damned, The Misfits, The Exploited, Dead Kennedys, etc.
The Cramps and the Meteors were psychobilly but because of their energy they got lumped into the punk rock scene of that era too, it seems.
Funny. Out of those you named, only a couple were called punk outside of here. The rest were considered rock/hard rock. You haven’t even named the ONE American band that was considered GENIUS outside of here. Talking Heads. Not punk, but brilliant enough to stand all on their own. I’ve always wondered why the hip hop / rap performers never sampled them.
