Why do guys warn you for their friend/brother?

My friend and I noticed that in the last few months, you often meet guys in bars that do something like the following:

Guy #1 winks at me or says hi or something. Guy #2 then approaches, telling me to watch out for his friend, because he is naughty/flirt/player. Then later on makes watch out gestures.

Why do guys do that?

I’ve seen this happen before. When I see it, it’s usually because someone who has a reputation for being the quiet, shy type suddenly taps a hidden store of confidence from somewhere and becomes a ladies man literally overnight.

His friends then jokingly warn every woman in sight.

It’s pretty funny ain’t it. Guys that are in the know will use it as a wingman tactic to convey social proof. One time during a convention in Vegas I noticed a male coworker trying to open set with some attractive young ladies. He’s a big guy and very insecure about that so this was a big step for him. I walked up very boldly and was like “dude…really? (looking back and forth between him and the girls with mock disbelief) for reals?..again?” I grabbed a mutual friend of ours and pointing at him I say “This guy…is a phenomenon” and walked away.
Curiosity peaked, image elevated, clouds part and my friend is bathed in golden rays of sunshine as the girls perception of him is suddenly changed.

Oddly enough guys NOT in the know will use it as a cockblock tactic which rarely works as it conveys quite obviously their own interest in the girl they’re saying it to and at the same time telling the girl that this is the kind of guy that women find attractive enough for sexual encounters quite often.

So depending on the context it’s either the guy saying it, is a friend of the guy being called a player and he’s trying to help in making him seem like an interesting sex worthy guy, or…the guy saying it is an AFC that wants you for himself and he thinks that by warning you he’ll cockblock the “player” and open a path for himself.

I was thinking more of the latter. That sure is a nice “FRIEND” to have

What you guys are saying totally makes sense. I’ve never seen the accused guy get upset over it, so likely it is a premeditated thing. Gee, it could even be a way to get both of them girls. If you like naughty, there is Guy #1 having been profiled as such. If you prefer the nice, protective type, Guy #2 has shown you he is one. Plus when they return, you remember them as funny. This time I was surrounded by a group of foreign girls who were hiting on me when they returned, but guys who do this usually come back for a chat.

Another related question: Sometimes you are talking to two guys and they will tell you about the stuff they have in common. One time I noticed they wore a similar coat and they said they were also both blue eyed and tall and I replied they also had a similar haircolour and then they said they were both handsome and both drinking the same brand of beer. I laughed but was also kind of going ‘Huh?’

They were playing with you, Butterfly. It’s friendly teasing. It happens to me a lot when I go out. A woman in a bar might say, ‘Oh, you’re very tall.’

I might turn around and say, ‘You’re very cute, Kitten.’

The comments women come out with sometimes… it makes me roll my eyes. They really are bad at opening. It’s just a way of turning what could have been an awkward moment into a joking, playful tease, get her to laugh and pull her into a conversation.

Yeah, sometimes nonsensical things I’m thinking just roll out of my mouth before I realise. I’m good at keeping secrets, but blab harmless stuff like “Oh wow those shoes are cute, do you wear a 4.5?” Or I notice a cat while I’m in the middle of something.

But it is cool to have this forum, I can ask all about what men think.
