'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

In a number of recent posts, for example this one, I have mentioned the California-based nonprofit, Heart of Sailing Foundation.

Wines for Autism is a sponsor of Heart of Sailing. Started by Christine Roffi, the goal of Wines for Autism is to promote awareness that there is hope for children suffering from Autism and to help fund non-profit organisations that aid the families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders…

In an earlier post, I mentioned Cellar Angels, a web-based wine marketing company which partners with marquee California wineries to raise funds for various charities across the United States.

In my post from yesterday, I mentioned Wines for Autism. Wines for Autism was started in 2009 by stay-at-home mom, Christine Roffi, who is directly affected by Autism. The goal of Wines for Autism is to promote awareness that there is hope for children suffering from an Autism Spectrum Disorder and to help fund non-profit organisations that aid the families affected by Autism…

In a recent post, I mentioned Autism Family Services of New Jersey (AFSNJ). In New Jersey, according to a 2012 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , 1 in every 49 people have an Autism diagnosis compared to America’s national average of 1 in 88 people. AFSNJ is a leading provider of family support services to the Autism population under contract with the New Jersey State Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). The Trenton, New Jersey-based nonprofit holds the largest gathering of Autism families in New Jersey each year at the Annual Beach Bash in Belmar…

The subject of yesterday’s post was Autism Family Services of New Jersey (AFSNJ). The Trenton, New Jersey-based nonprofit is a leading provider of family support services to the Autism population under contract with the New Jersey State Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). AFSNJ holds another annual event–the Seaside Soiree features a beautiful evening on the beach with a reggae band, silent auction and lobster dinner to entertain and please the crowd of community supporters. Proceeds from the Soiree offset costs of AFSNJ’s free, annual Beach Bash mentioned in the above post…

The subject of yesterday’s post was the Virginia Autism Project, a non-profit that focuses on educating, advising and collaborating with federal, state and local decision makers and the general public on issues that impact individuals with Autism and their communities, while raising awareness throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In yesterday’s post, I mentioned POAC (Parents of Autistic Children) fishing events.

The Fisherman’s Conservation Association (FCA) is another organisation that uses fishing as a force for good. The nonprofit has a ‘Hooked For A Lifetime’ fishing program, teaching Autistic kids as well as children from underserved communities that fishing can be a great way to have fun. Not only does the program teach children where, when and how to fish, but it also sends them home with all the materials and equipment they need to continue enjoying what they were taught and exposed to at the program. Each child who attends a ‘Hooked For A Lifetime’ event receives a rod, reel and tackle box with tackle and ‘How To’ guide. The FCA believes that by getting kids ‘Hooked on Fishing’, they are establishing a generation of future stewards of the resource…

The last two posts have mentioned the GRACE Foundation of New York. Another Autism-focused nonprofit organisation based in New York City/Long Island, is the Eden II and Genesis Foundation. The organisation’s primary purpose is to provide much needed funds for programs and services that support individuals with Autism. The Eden II and Genesis Foundation supports programs, serving children and adults with autism, including day schools for children, as well as day and residential services for adolescents and adults. A Golf Outing is held each year to benefit the organisation, whose previous name was the Foundation for the Advancement of Autistic Persons (FAAP)…

The subject of the previous post was the Eden II and Genesis Foundation. Formerly known as the Foundation for the Advancement of Autistic Persons (FAAP), the organisation’s primary purpose is to provide much needed funds for programs and services that support individuals with Autism. The Eden II School for Autistic Children, located in Staten Island, New York, was founded in 1976 after FAAP parents identified an existing successful program–the Eden Institute (located in Princeton, New Jersey).

The Eden Institute’s new facility incorporates in its design what I described in an earlier post–‘Neuro-typical’ environments that can prepare the Autistic individual for the outside world by potentially helping such an individual develop generalisation skills, which are often poor in Autism. So the Eden Institute incorporates frequent ‘generalisation’ exercises in which pupils venture into the neighboring food court and stores or work in some of the restaurants…

Yesterday’s post focused on Autism and Architecture, specifically the Eden Institute’s new facility. The site of Eden Autism Services’ new school is at Princeton Forrestal Village in Plainsboro, New Jersey. It offers a safe and supportive real-world training ground for Autistic individuals…

The organisation’s primary purpose is to provide much needed funds for programs and services that support individuals with Autism. The nonprofit has a Capital Campaign, that, among other projects, is helping to raise funds for the new ‘Eden II school for Autistic children’ being renovated and designed in Stapleton, Staten Island…

In the past week, I have mentioned a number of New York/New Jersey-based nonprofit organisations dedicated to helping individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Another such organisation is HeartShare Human Services of New York. The HeartShare School is a non-profit educational institution located in Brooklyn, New York. The school caters to children ages 5 to 21 who fall on the Autism Spectrum or who have other developmental disabilities. A unique aspect of the school is its integration of TEACCH with Applied Behaviour Analysis. The classrooms at HeartShare also utilise state-of-the-art computers and learning software…
