Peaks island ferry and spent the whole day on the island, hiked the beach and climbed rocks and got sunburned and wet, visited the umbrella cover museum, ( yes it exists on peaks island!) Portland was in its glory today, ate pizza from a wood burning brick oven, the streets had live music and balloon animals and people being mellow and happy. Got home and tired and sore, thinking about winter.
lakes freeze so solid here you can drive a truck out on them, pulling ice fishing shacks onto the ice, people cut holes down deep into the ice, which is strangely blue and glows. They heat their shacks with little propaine heaters. The ice moans and creaks and when you walk across the lake it is like a trampoline, it bounces and waves under your feet, it squeaks and cracks and shudders. Places on the ice have rock like formations formed when the ice pushes into itself, like fault lines.I understand why the Inuit have so many names for snow now, how each type has a character that tells you something about what is happening in nature at the moment. Some snow is almost like sand-it blows gritty and can whiteout your vision and scald your cheeks raw, like they were burned. and there is spring snow that smells like spring.
So I am nesting, getting ready for next spring and weathering winter again. The trees have lost the lighter green of spring, the darker green of summer, they are now that final green before winter, the dark, dry looking and slightly waxy color right before the leaves turn. The last of the baby animals have started to wander into the roads, the skunk babies are some of the last to go, hunting season will start and even our dogs will have to wear bright orange in the yard for fear of being shot. Here hunting season arrives and all of the peope here wear bright orange, even going to check their mail, businesses have early hours for coffee specials for the hunters, and a cow or horse gets shot at by some idiot some years, people have started to dress their horses in orange blankets. Guys walk through the back acres wearig cammo and carring rifles, and deer run through my yard, bless them, to hide near my apple trees. The hunters are supposed to respect the house and leave them be.Crazy guy next door shoots off his porch this time of year. My yard is full of wild turkeys that wander into my drive way and stare at me, they have little fear and are dumb as bricks, following each other right into passing cars, like squirrels, they have no idea what to do about traffic. I still think they are somehow cute though, with their strange walk and necks poking forward when they walk, as if they can not move legs without moving their funny, tiny heads. And of course, we worry about moose on the road, which can kill you if you hit them, because they fall on the cars. never hit one, but came close a few times, mostly I see deer, especially on these mornings, it is cool and they like the mist of the season, they also like the early twilight and late sun in the mornings, deer are creatures of mist and dusk. They love to eat my apples, which fall and turn into semi alcoholic cider mush, wild things love to eat them and get slightly drunk. Some mornings I can see that animals have eaten them up from the ground to six feet or so off the trees, but they also like the ones that drop. Have some chipmunks, saucy little guys who live near my mailbox and who stare at me fron a few feet away, scolding me. Some strange animals living a few acres back, I hear it call at night. Dont know what it may be, and the call is loud. I know we have fishers here, they eat cats, they are like giant ferrets with attitude.foxes, mink, wolves, here too.
i can still hear a few grasshoppers. after first frost, when the ticks, biting flys and mosquitos are gone, I will cover myself with orange and climb up the mountain. There are old foundations of settlers houses there, old cemeteries, camps and trails, lots of logging so some places look bad, but animals love places that have been logged. I will climb up, and tie orange plastic ribbons around trees to mark my path through my yard, It is not possible to mark it well enough to keep hunters out but they will notice the path and understand a house is five acres back. It also helps me find my way around in winter when I cant always make out a path. It has certainly been a help some days when I get lost.
fall makes me long for spring, although it is lovely it is so short lived here, and winter so long and so dark. usually you go to work when it is dark out and get home when it is dusk, and the only sun you see is during lunchtime. I just miss the sun, weekdays. Laine sunshine is white light, a clear and still light, not like the hazy golden light of the midwest. The colors are crisp here, and the little towns look like currier and Ives lithographs. I think Wyeth paints New England at its best.
what does this have to do with pheremones? nothing
