I suppose I misspoke or I was not made clear. Interacting with people is not good or bad in itself. Having relationships with other people is not good and bad in itself. However, using other people for your own ends is evil, and illusory. For some reason it seems to come easily to men in particular in our culture, though I don’t doubt that women also fall into this. That is what I mean by “the game”. In the end, there really is nothing to get, absolute ownership of anything is impossible. I start from a place of detachment. I suppose that is otherworldly but that is how I often think now days. Companionship is not that important to me. Certainly I enjoy talking with people and sometimes it is helpful, but I would have no problems remaining celibate the rest of my life, it is not a problem for me. I admit that might change, but I don’t worry about it.
Understanding and relating to people is not too hard. People have the same basic motivations. They don’t like being miserable or unhappy, and they want to be part of something beyond themselves; self-transcendence. Then comes the Golden Rule or reciprocity - “Regard others as yourself” and “Whatever is hurtful to you, do not cause to others”. Beyond that is wisdom, of course, which is not a rule so much as a combination of experience and awareness through the noetic faculty, “seeing deeply”.
As I said, I have been thinking about what I will do in the future. I am not sure yet. I could go into psychology, I have thougth about going into a religious life of some kind. I probably could use more spiritual guidance, so I have been thinking about wheather I should formally convert to Buddhism. OTOH, I grew up as a Methodist until I was a in college, so I have gone to churches a few times although I’m not sure it really seems real to me. I owe alot to my study of Buddhism.
In the end, I will probably have to move, though. I really don’t like alot of things about Orlando. I think I would enjoy living in a city or a town where I could walk more places. I dislike cars and strip malls, and all the other alienating stuff out in the suburbs. It really is not a good way to live, in an asphalt wasteland. I have also thought about getting involved in volunteer work, even if I don’t leave, that kind of thing is where I feel I should be going moreso than I am now. Now days I identify mostly with awareness of compassion, it’s what is meaningful for me.
Thank you for your advice and I will keep everything you said in consideration, Bella. It is nice that you consider me a friend. I consider you a friend too.
