Derogitory comments on the radio

I was listening to a station based out of Fort Wayne Indaina. There were 2 dj’s, one male, and the other female. The female was talking about some function that was happening that had a primarily female demographic. The male said he was supposed to be going with his wife and hoped it would be snowed about because it sounded “Gay.” He used the word gay, 2 more times to put down the function.

I was shocked, and thought about it for a couple minutes. I realized that such statements are made my 1/2 of the people I know and 3/4 of that other 1/2 wouldn’t even be fased by such statments. They probably would find it offensive.

I’m sure it wasn’t intentional to bash homosexual people. It shows how conditioned the people in my area to not accept differnces in people.

Ever person I have encountered that was homosexual has been ostrocised to a large extent. Especialy men. I don’t think a homosexual man could lead a happy life where I live.

I’m a heterosexual male, and respect the choices that other people make. It is not my place to judge. I have had gay friends in the past, and know they would be outraged by the statements made by that DJ.

I just thought I would talk to the people who would care about this, as my friends wouldn’t find it as something outragouse and dismiss it instantly.

and how can an party have a sexual orientation?

Oh my God!! :open_mouth: This is a total Hoosier thing! And very Fort Wayne . I dealt with the same issue in highschool, and was completely shocked by it having come from another state.

Unfortunately, I’ve become desensitized. I’m still not happy with it, though I don’t fly off the roof like I used to. It’s more uncommon where I am, now, too.

My cousin said in the 80s the same thing happened, only:

“That’s so Jewish.”

“You’re such a Jew.”

…How times change… and don’t.

I hear the Jew thing on a regular basis. One of my friends is very frugal, so a couple other friends think it’s funny to call him a Jew. The skater kids use it a lot as well.

REALLY. :open_mouth:

They think it’s funny. You don’t know how many times i’ve heard “Shut you you stupid Jew.” It’s all in jest, but thats not the point.

For the skater kid. “Quit being jewish” Or “That’s Jewish”

Basicly anywhere you could say “gay” in an improper manor replace it with jew or jewish. same concept.

I’d say that there are plenty of people who are lacking in self-confidence / self-worth and feel the need to be superior.

Some choose to feel superior to animals (go figure!) and they mistreat or abuse animals. Some choose whatever human social group they can identify as an “outgroup” – based on (anatomic) sex, gender, age, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation, job/profession … and then they find a social group of similarly challenged persons to identify with. “We’re the nnn’ers, we’re better than yyy folk.”

It’s not much of a hobby from my point of view, but it’s all that some people have. Stamp collecting would be a big improvement, I think.

I sat at lunch yesterday behind two guys who spent about 15 minutes discussing the fights they had been in, the illegitimate children they had fathered, the drugs they had taken and sold and the cons & crimes they had commited and the benefit fraud they were running.

They then spent the next 15 minutes passionately discussing how this country was being ruined, society spolied and traditional values wasted by all the ‘pakis’ coming in.

I was and still am speechless.

as bad as it sounds - I’ve gotten to the point where i just can’t get upset about this type of stuff anymore. there’s always going to be someone acting ignorant, and as long as they aren’t trying to be ignorant around me, specifically, i can’t be arsed to try to change it. people don’t change. Now i’ve had to correct people when they thought they could say soemthing stupid liek that in a conversation with me, but otherwise i jsut chalk it up to personal stupidity. I would be stressed out and angry all day if i didn’t.

this right here is what i regularly experience.
more than that, i love when people look at me with my children, make a derogatory comment about the gay/lesbien community , and assume i feel the same way…i tell them “yeah, good thing my girlfriend doesnt feel that way”.
toilofday, your in indiana dude.
i am in florida.
both notorious for lack of tolerance…
as a bartender i could tolerate and take into consideration certain things people said was in fact goofing on themselves, for the sake of lightening up a situation, but you know when this is not the case .
more often than not,i find it a (lame) way to lighten up the conversation, not serious.

Some of us Hoosiers refer to Florida as the warm version of Indiana.

I thought i’d update this for one last event of derogitory comments.

The Girl B in my lasts copulin post was talking about her last boyfriend and said, “he’s gay.” She said it in such a non insulting manor that I thought her ex had turned gay. I inquired and she made it clear she was insulting him. WOW! I can’t stress how calm this was said. It sounded like someone ways saying stating the obviouse. Something like My ex is Boy George. He’s gay.

Then Girl A was talking about this Amish guy that was hitting on her at a bar. She said, “…so this J.O. was…” I’m wondering what the heck a J.O. is. I inquire and was told “Jerked Off Amish.” WTF!!! Seriously. :open_mouth:

You should hear about all the mexicans who are responsible for all of the theft in the area, as well as many other problems. :frowning:

The Black community (which is very small). That’s a little different actualy. There are still the old farts who discriminate, but they don’t do it as openly. There are some people my age who openly discriminate by making racists jokes, but base it off of stereotypes that they think fit.

On the other side there is overcompensation. Everybody is worried about not being racists they create a second problem. Plus if you were to be accused of being racists by a black person to your employer there would be no defending yourself even if it was a bold faced lie and you had others to back your story. Bye Bye.

By far the J.O. was the most offensive thing i’ve heard in a while, because there is no social conditioning about that one. It’s just straight mean. I understand (dissagree and don’t like it) the gay statements use, but J.O. is like calling a gay man a faggot.:frowning:

People, educate your children.:frowning:

I’m moving to California in a few years. Welcome diversity.

really? you’ve never heard anyone called a jackoff? you need to spend time in Brooklyn. i don’t think it’s got anything to do with sexuality (or at least not on the East Coast) it’s jsut another variation on jackass, and not much different from wanker.

as for calling people and things “gay” - I thought people grew out of that, by like Sophomore year.

I have heard of people being called a jackoff, but this is suposedly a known comment about the amish. If I was to say, “I saw this J.O. yesterday” they would instantly think of an amish man. I said, this Jackoff pissed me off yesterday, people may ask me what happened, but they wouldn’t be thinking amish.

People here never grew out of it, as there is aparently no need in this area to recognize cultural, religious, or sexual differences.

oh..so J.O. doesn’t stand for Jackoff, it specifically refers to a Jerked Off Amish?

a - that’s not even a well crafted ethnic slur

b - it makes no sense. but i’ve never been around any Amish, save the time i visited pennsylvania dutch country, so what do i know.

either way - yes by all means, get out as soon as you’re able. I did it, and have no regrets!

I really couldn’t make sense of this so I googled and came up with Jerked Over Amish, which refers to a man who used to be Amish but left the church. That makes a little more sense I guess!

Toil, I feel ya. California will be great for you. Even if it did inspire the movie Crash, lol!

good call Carrie! I was gonna google JO too, and then got distracted by soemthign else.

i wonder if the jerked over part refers to be being shunned by the people.

Thanks to toilofday and to Carrie both for leading me to the term “jerked over Amish”. There’s an interesting ‘sermon’ here from Phil’s Little Blog on the Prairie titled The Devil’s Playground. It gives some insight into the phenomenon called Rumspringa, when Amish youth, as a rite of passage, venture out to experience the “English world” also known as the Devil’s Playground.

During Rumspringa, sometime after 16th birthday, driving cars, dancing, smoking, using tobacco, alcohol, are all allowed – though they will be forbidden when and if the young person returns to the Amish religion as an adult.

Those who don’t return are no longer welcome in the Amish community: apparently the separation is not necessarily a moment of grace for all concerned. Hence, “Jerked-Over Amish.”

Thanks again – live and learn.

BUT! - and i learned this from Grey’s Anatomy just a few weeks back - apparently you are only shunned if you’ve coem back from Rumspringa, taken “orders” or what have you, and then decided to leave.

I guess if you just gone on walkabout and never come back, maybe your jerked over.

I watched that movie in a highschool class.

Yeah, Jerked Over is the term, I screwed it up.

Carrie, I can’t wait for Cali. It’s one of my biggest aspirations in life. That and living in Japan for 1 month.
