A hat-tip to Mark-in-Dallas who recommended this place to me.
Many of us are on a budget, especially with the economy being what it is. Some of Androtics’ stuff can be pricey, so when considering what pheros to purchase and what colognes you’d like to try, there’s often a conundrum. There are plenty of reviews of high-priced fragrances on here, and one that’s piqued my curiosity is Green Irish Tweed by Creed. Depending on where you get it, a 4 oz. bottle can run from around $150 on up to $250.
This is a very exclusive cologne that was originally designed for Cary Grant back in the 80’s. Since then, it’s become a favorite of Hollywood and even British Royalty. Prince Charles of Wales is reported to wear it. Some of you have it already, but others, like me, are left to remain curious until the Money Fairy blesses us with the extra cash to pony up for a bottle.
Let me interject that nothing beats the real thing. Absolutely nothing. So, what I’m recommending here is a fairly decent knock-off scent that I’ll say smells about 85-90% like the real deal. One caveat I should mention is that I’ve only smelled genuine GIT from one of those peel-apart sample cards, similar to what you see in magazines when I was in Nordstrom’s a few months ago. Fresh from the bottle is going to be different than a card that isn’t sealed in an airtight container and could be a couple of months old.
Having said that, I turned to a place called The Common Scents (google it, since I’m not sure if forum rules allow direct linking to other businesses), after Mark-in-Dallas recommended it to me. I ordered a bottle of their version of Green Irish Tweed for a whopping 2 dollars and change. It’s a fragrance oil that comes in a roll-on bottle.
It arrived today and when I smelled it from the bottle, I was a bit disappointed. To me, it smelled like bubble-bath. Still, knock-off or not, fragrances tend to alter their characteristics when applied to the skin, so I rolled an inch on the back of my hand and let it dry. 5 minutes later, I sniffed, and while it still had the bubble-bath undertones, I could detect a metamorphisis taking place. The sharp sweetness began to dull as more of the subtle notes started to come through.
15 minutes later and it was VERY close to the sample card I smelled. I even let my roommate (AKA, my ex-wife) take a whiff and her reaction was “Oooh, that smells good.” So, my disappointment turned to pleasure and I have to say I am happy with this.
Once again, I cannot stress how much this is NOT a replacement for the real deal, and I’m sure connoisseurs will know the difference pretty easily. However, it’s a great smell that’s close enough to the real thing that you can get away with saying that’s what you’re wearing, while chalking up the difference in notes to body chemistry, and it fits just about any budget. Give it a shot! If you don’t like it, you’re out less than a Venti Cappucino at Starbuck’s, and you can feel free to PM me telling me I’m nuts. ![]()
