Guys, Loathe Neroli? Try Grapefruit!

After the new policy on scenting the putatives and experimones came about, I went ahead and ordered a couple of to gos with the scents to see what was up. I got a P77 in Akuto 6% and a P78 in Grapefruit 6%. I know Grapefruit is listed for the girls but thought it might be unisex enough for a guy after reading some of what they said about it.

It’s pretty darned good. It’s easily unisex. When first applied it’s a straight up grapefruit scent. Fresh, citrusy and very light. I think it could work under a woody, citrus, bergamot or mossy/leafy men’s fragrance and it seems lighter to my nose than neroli. It dries down quickly to a musky note which could be the P78, and seems to nearly disappear after 15 minutes without cover.

The Akuto is probably not a good alternative to neroli for putatives unless you just like it. After an hour it was much stronger than the neroli to my nose.

I’ll probably stick with neroli because it’s the default and I don’t mind it. However if you just hate neroli, order a to go of something with the grapefruit and see what you think.

If you try it put up a post telling what you think.

Excellent idea.

I rather hope that with a perfumer on board that we will also see a greater variety of scents enter the lineup.

I suppose that could create option anxiety for some, but it would also give greater chance that there is “something for everyone.”

Renny, how do you feel the grapefruit’s diffusion stacks up against neroli? MX135, which usually comes in chocolatini, was recently released as cookie scent (MX235) and grapefruit (MX335). Reports were polarized as far as the effect of MX335 vs MX135: some loved it as much as 135, others saw nothing.

Ari, I can’t speak to diffusion yet as I’ve only had it a couple of days. Also it’s P78 which is a putative I know nothing about so I don’t even know what effects if any I’m looking for yet. My assumption here is that it’s better than unfragranced. I’m really just looking for something a guy can wear that isn’t neroli or a cologne type smell.

To update: after the grapefruit aroma died down (15 minutes or so after dry down) the smell remained very light. The aroma itself reminded me of a pear. Some physical activity about 4 hours after application regenerated the aroma of pear somewhat so it doesn’t disappear completely. Still of the opinion that a guy could get away with this stuff. I’m wearing 2 sprays today, no cover, so I’ll update this again if it gets weird.

Ladies weigh in if you’ve tried it and think it too fem for a guy. :stuck_out_tongue:

Fair enough! Let me know what you find in the future, though. I’m interested, as I don’t care for the current neroli (they’re working on a new one, though), but the grapefruit to me smells like feet. I would never wear either alone, however, so it’s whatever blends best with my cover scents. I have read that men respond better unconsciously to grapefruit scents on women, which is why I’m wondering if adding it might be helpful, feetiness or no.

Like I said above, I thought it smelled like feet, so I wouldn’t exactly say it was too femme. Other women loved it, however.

Also, there’s that “men respond better unconsciously” aspect to it: Business: Grapefruit scent has romantic effect, study finds Subconsciously, it could possibly be too femme to another guy.

Which is one reason I thought I would make a good test case. Most of my customers are guys and the tackle store is a place where guys make fun of each other so I’ll know pretty quick if any guys think I smell “sweet”.

Maybe I should have gotten IH in grapefruit. :open_mouth:

Did you have MX335 or something else? I’m wondering if the “feet” smell is pheromone or fragrance as I got a bit of a musky/earth smell and was wondering if it was the P78 or the “plant musk” that AD adds to help diffusion.

I have MX335, and I had another MX in grapefruit that smelled the same to me. I’m trying to remember what it was… MX250, maybe? It was a freebie, and the scent was so not to my liking that I gave it away. :o

It could very well be that it’s a constituent and not the fragrance itself that is the problem. I will have to try something benign in grapefruit scent to test. I was going to buy some TAK soon to compare its sleep effects against P86. Does TAK have a smell on its own, that you know of?

Yes, more choice for guys and gals. Guys def need a light sandlewood.

I think the biggest thing about putatives and experimones, though, is the strength of the fragrance, no matter what it is. Once you go past 3 sprays of Game or Akuto for that matter, you are just wearing too much fragrance. The Old AMMO was a little more forgiving, you could go 4 or 5 with it, but hey I like to marinate myself when I’m trying to figure out a putative. LOL. Like I say, I can handle the neroli, but I know some guys just plain hate it and a few have mentioned having bad reactions to it.

oh see i loved the grapefruit.

i think it dissapeared after 20 minutes and i could cover it with anything.

where i am,
grapefruit is an aphrodesiac;

its a common smell in the hoppy-goodness i call beer

i dont find it particularly feminine/masculine

sandalwood would rock !!!

Not sure on TAK, it doesn’t to me. You might PM Warren I think he’s done a lot with TAK and has done a lot of posting about it. He should know if there is a consensus on whether people generally think it smells. Diane999 may be able to help with that too.

Lor, it was something you wrote that made me think of trying Grapefruit, thanks!

Have you found that you can smell the pheromones underneath it? Have you noticed any sort of musk component in it?

grapefruit yuck!..i have yet to find a cologne that has done grapefruit right

Vanilla is great if done right, but is very hard to get it where it is not too sickling sweet, there are a few vanillas I own and love, Tom ford Tobacco Vanille (which has become my #1 most complimented cologne to date now), Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille, and Rochas Man

sandalwood would be great for men, problem is coming out with a superb sandalwood, that is not too expensive

well im a terrible person to ask here,

yes
i can slightly smell pheromones underneith
but
keep in mind i dont mind most of the pheromone smell.

i have a hyper-sensitive nose but at the same time that doesnt mean the smells bother me.

id really love to see some sandalwood though.
who doesnt like the smell of that?
paired with grapefruit?
yum.

we have asked for vanilla before,
but i think it was finding a good one that halted that.
vanilla
sandalwood
neroli

i even like vetiver

I’ve gotten samples of Zeste Mandarin Pamplemousse with a couple of my Creed orders and worn it. It too is a fifteen minute wonder. That’s really the only grapefruit i’ve tried.

A good dry vanilla scent could be worn under a lot of colognes, good suggestion.

It’s very difficult to find a good vanilla. So far I like the coconut vanilla they used in the P74 Women’s Test Pack, which I think is available for any product now. It’s rather sweet, however, definitely not a dry vanilla.

Have any of you tried Lavanila’s scents? They have a Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Blossom, Vanilla Coconut, Vanilla Grapefruit, and Vanilla Lavender.

vetiver is really nice and has great diffusion and sillage as well along with vanilla

OK, doubled the dose again to 4 sprays. Still very light scent package, I don’t feel over cologned at all. The P78 must be pretty stanky because I can smell a very -none_ish musk through the grapefruit. Could this be the stinky feet? Is it part of the diffusion package or is it the P78? Tommorrow I’ll add a cologne cover and see how that works.

the two sprays yesterday lasted a bit longer than the single spray and there was more of a floral note that could be picked up if I sniffed the app point. Still thinking this could be an option for neroli haters.

The 4 sprays lasted a lot longer scent wise. Ariadne had asked about diffusion and I’m starting to think that diffusion with the grapefruit is probably just as good as neroli. The scent does seem to hold close to the skin but I think the pheromone is getting out there. It may just be that the lightness of the grapefruit is more difficult to smell at a distance.

I do think that past 4 sprays a guy is going to have to cover with a citrus or woody fragrance to overcome the floral back ground of the grapefruit scent. Still not bad. I was going to go six sprays today but got more interested in the P78 at 2 sprays so Maybe I’ll come back in a few and boost up to six just to see if the fragrance gets too feminine.

I am always frustrated by colognes which claim to have citrus tones because cirtrus always means lemon (or lime). I think it should be orange – not orange flower like neroli, which is okay (maybe a little sweet) but ORANGE.

I just got some grapefruit fragrance pheros last week. I love it. Haven’t had a chance to wear them yet, but just opening the bottle and sniffing is great. Grapefruit has a bitter sour twang, which I don’t think should be considered too feminine. We’ll see how the scent holds up in actual use.
