When making a mix, it is awesome to have a calulator to get amounts. I praise Nbully for everthing he has done to at least design a calc for everyone here. That ROCKS!
However, mls (using the Androtics pipette) and sprays are not very accurate. I know that several people here make thier own mixes. What are YOU using to measure your pheros with accuracy? Where did you obtain what you are using?
Pipettes are in fact pretty accurate and while you could regard both the pippetes and spray as not being ‘dead on the spot’ in accuracy, Androtics products in terms of pheromone content in mcg are subject to +/-5%.
Ye need not worry about 0.0001mcg extra of pheromone in your mix. Oh and if you ment spraying in a bottle then no, use a pipette.
Quick note for those that forgot high school chemistry (good god it’s been a bit for me!), the bottom of the meniscus is where one would measure from in anything with graduated lines. That little bit at the edge that curves up is accounted for when they make the measurements.
good places to get cheap lab-ware: some good local hobby shops, and places like http://www.mcmaster.com/ (just type "droppers, or “flasks” into the search at the top left), that will ship same day. also try http://www.smallparts.com
I am not concerned with 0.0001, but more concerned with an amount like .125 mcg. I would like something more accurate. The pipette is accurate, just not to the degree I am looking for. I am wondering if anyone else here has purchased something else that would give me more control over smaller mcgs.
For instance, if I have a 100mcg per spray of a product, but wanted to dilute it down to 1 mcg per spray, in a togo bottle, it is very hard with a pipette supplied from androtics to do that.
Yeah, precision & 3ml plastic pipette Hehe…Where do I begin?
You need a pipette boy I have my old “eppie” (Eppendorf) from my days as a labrat but they retail at about $300-600 depending on the model. You can get cheap used ones on eBay tho. You should be able to pick one up for $40-50.
Yep, that should be ok. Just make sure you match the size/volume of the tip to the pipette’s capacity. As for accuracy, you’re better off getting a used good quality one than a cheap new “no-name brand” pipette. A good quality pipett should have a calibration mechanism on it
It’s a very basic model but let’s face it… You’re not going to be mixing monoclonal antibodies Eppendorf is a good quality brand & even the basic model will be good enough for your needs. I can’t tell from the pic if it has a calibration mechanism on it, but it has adjustable volumes which is good. What’s the volume capacity? The tip is looking something like 50ul?
I think the one in the pic is an older edition of their “Reference” range
They are good, easy to use & accurate. I don’t think they have a calibration mechanism but they do have the “automatically locking volume” mechanism which is brilliant…basically, if you set the volume to 125ul, the pipette wont take volumes larger when the button is fully pressed, it stops there so you get an exact volume
The capacity (100-1000ul) sounds like what you’d need
Sounds like a lot of fun! Lots of togos with unneeded diluted amounts. I would rather spend ~$50 and not have the headache of messing with it. Plus it would probably cost me that much in togo bottles and dilutent anyways! I like to work smart and not hard. That is my style
You would therefore need a device that can dose 10 microliters to actually get 1ml worth of 1mcg per spray from 100mcg per spray bottle. You would then still need to dilute this with 990 microliters or 0.99ml to actually get 1ml worth.
The difference is volume, you are basically mixing much smaller batches at a time, the dilutent is not changing unless you are just mixing pheromone products together, in which case the total pheromone count only averages out unless you add plain alcohol to water it down so you’re not actually saving on dilutant in all honesty, only allowing for more combinations and less product wastage.
I can see where you are coming from, personally I would just get a syring with 1/10th of a ml markings.
