Iām not sure if Iām the best person to ask, because Iām a fan of niche designers (as opposed to designer fragrances that are readily available in department stores). The creations from niche perfumers typically cost more than what you would normally pay for a designer fragrance at a regular department store. Fragrance is highly individual and youāve got to find the best one FOR YOU. ![]()
My recommendation? Go to a nice department store like Nordstrom or Barneyās New York and tell them youāre looking for a new cologne. If they know their stuff, they should be able to ask you some questions about your personality and what you like/dislike, and then show you a few colognes that you will like. Personally, I cannot stand the note calone/methylbenzodioxepinone which is used to give a āfresh/marineā note to fragrances like Cool Water or Acqua di Gio. This note and ones similar to it tend to show up in SOOO many designer fragrances. I hate Cool Water and Acqua di Gio with a passion, but thatās just me.
My recommendations ā but fragrance is a highly individual and personal choice, and you might not like these scentsā¦I love rich Oriental type fragrances, so Iām biased. I hear that Terre de Hermes is delicious, but Iāve never smelled it.
You might want to shoot a PM to traderneil here ⦠I think he is one of the commercial fragrance aficionados ⦠Michael Harris (MHarris) is also clearly all over and on top of the fragrance arena, but he never PMs anymore! ![]()
One good web resource to use is Basenotes: Your independent online guide to the world of perfume and fragrances . They have a forum where cologne users speak about their experiences with different fragrances. Some are niche users mainly, some us more of the mainstream colognes. Also they break down a lot of the colognes by their top, middle and base notes so you can find colognes that smell like Hugo Boss or have a certain note from Boss that you might like. The colognes I like right now are Very Irresistable, John Varvatos, Gendarme and Green Irish Tweed.
Jasmin recommended the Akuto fragrance to me⦠she said that they have it at the https://a314.com/ store. I havenāt tried it yet.
Iām honored to see that you think so highly of my taste in fragrance. ![]()
I do PM when I can, but for the next month or so my focus is on streamling this company for higher production. Also, I tend to be long winded, and my right hand is still healing. The two make for a painful combination.
Ultimately, itās all up to personal preference.
Here, I like Akuto, which is our own fragrance in development (awaiting an initial pheromone package). Not released yet, but out of the experimental mixes, some people like the MX113.
Elsewhere (Sakās), I like Clive Christian X. Itās not an inexpensive fragrance, but itās very strong & tenacious, so it sort of works itself out on the value scale (think 1 spray of this vs. 20 sprays of Liz Claiborne; is a cheap but weak fragrance really all that cheap?)
If you cannot smell it in person, Iād recommend that you start with a decant, offered on basenotes or ebay. In time, we may offer a few decants here for convenience. You may also be able to persuade the fragrance counter workers at Saks to give you a sample for free. Itās definitely worth trying at least once.
Gosh⦠I remember it being expensive, but not this expensive:
Clive Christian - X for Men Perfume Spray - Saks.com
Methinks they drastically increased their prices. Either that, or the war-time US dollar (the US always tanks the value of the dollar by printing excess current to more cheaply āfinanceā wars) is having a dramatic impact on the fragrance trade. Maybe someone in the UK could check their local prices on Clive Christian to see if theyāve changed over there as much as they have here.
my god thats an amazing price! has anyone got any other sites that i could purchase something good (and deleiver to the Uk) or something i can buy from teh shops as $335 is out of my price league!
also these are apprently quite good
Creed Green Irish Tweed, Jil Sander Sun Men, Kenneth Cole Signature, Creed Royal Water, Marc Jacobs Men
any others?

Chergui & Musc ravegar are really great.

i have the emotion bottle
Ones i like include:
Gucci Envy = Dates/Evening
Aqua Di Gio = Summer
Burberry Brit = Winter
Issey Miyake = General Use
Dior Homme is also very nice, but i dont currently own that. Very sophisticated.
Musc Ravageur
**hi timez,
picking a fragrance is not an easy thing to do, it is very personalā¦my suggestion to you, which has been very highly successful for me is to check a site called basenotes.net. the method i used to discover new fragrances(and itās yet to fail for me) is look up a cologne you like and check the notes. then do searches in the directory for one or more of those notes and see what comes up. sometimes a note that is used with one combination of fragrances will smell different in another cologne but just as appealingā¦i couldnāt go into how many different colognes i have tried because of this method and like i saidā¦never been unhappy with one! i donāt know that i would ever have tried on el by j. del pozo(one of my faves) or musc ravageur(my top fave), or paradox by jacomo or hanae mori for men. definitely would never have invested in some of the lāartisan fragrances (which number one is safran troublant!!!) were it not for the site
the site runs the gamut of drugstore colognes to hard to find niche colognes so you will have much luck finding something! i hope you check it out and post again and let us know if you had any luck!

Theres one I found called āSexualā but it is very hard to find as it is only available at 12 Bloomingdales in the U.S. (or so I was told), and itās about $75 U.S. My all around favorite though is āGucci Envyā, great for any situation costs about $70 U.S.
my favs are hugo boss: energize (nobody i know doesnt like that) issey miyake (general favourite), cool water, sean john unforgiveable (even though i dont care for the name it smells good), armani code, Aqua Di Gio, Dunhill pursuit, ted baker: london night & prada!
I love Cool Water for the type of ācoolnessā.
I love Jil Sander Sun for the happy type
Probably PERFECT with Instant Shine
I love Burberry Brit just to wear a good quality and not too serious edt.
Just one thing: is there a difference between āCologneā and 'Eau De Toilette"? I only know Cologne is a German city as well
(Kƶln)
I used to be a Drakkar guy. Even though itās old school, itās always smelled great on me. Even up to the last time I wore it a couple of months ago, Iād get compliments. I decided to try something new, which not too many people are wearing around here and I decided on Issey Miyake intense. Itās now my favorite cologne and it covers -none wonderfully.
