Job Interviews and A314

I’m finally graduated, ready to venture into phero land again!

I’ve been applying to jobs and got interviews with two companies, and I decided to give myself a two drop advantage from my old bottle of sauce (rev 23 batch 1).

Effects I noticed:

  • Less nervous by far than I’d usually be.
  • Brutally honest, not apologetic. Probably could have done better if I explained my experience more.
  • It felt like I was doing the interviewing, it just felt natural to take command and ask all the questions. Not something I normally do.
  • I couldn’t answer the “canned” questions they had, I got stumped. I had to reply with another question to see what the real motivation was. Probably came off as gently calling them out for a BS form question.
  • Otherwise I’d ignore the question and answer what I sensed what was the underlying concern.
  • I was very heavily reading into things and completely ignoring face value.
  • The HR people seemed to “get” me, and thought I was a good candidate.
  • The manager types were generally mum. It’s like the level of ice started low but continually increased throughout the interview.

In neither case did I make it to the team interview…its like the managers were anxious I would take their jobs, or like such a thing was inevitable.

I’ve read in other threads that it was bad for interviews, now I have first hand experience why!

Well, and now I know why all the generic interview tips out there on the internet generally suggest “act like a little bitch” in so many other words. No manager is willing to hire someone who is already acting like his future replacement…

So, my generic conclusions:
HR saw me as confident and saw value.
Management saw me as cocky and saw a competitor.

In the future, I’d probably only use the two-drop if I was interviewing with a woman, or if it was a form of group interview. One-on-one, man-to-man, there’s too much worst-case-scenario estimation going on, and otherwise it seems to remind them of their own stress, and causes personal space issues that can’t easily be solved on-the-fly.

Self after-effects? God, the sauce made it so easy for me I’m looking forward to more job hunting. Emotionally, its like I can distance myself and not take my lack of immediate success personally since I can conveniently blame it on pheromones or humidity or whatever.

This is a 2009-vintage bottle that has been left in the car a good long while, with exposure to plenty of oven-like temperatures. Not sure if any of the steering pheromones cooked off. Maybe that is why I came off/felt kind of cocky?

Anyone else have interview war stories? What worked, what didn’t / tips on turning the tide in your favor?

Actually, now that I think about it, I was so confident going in, that I didn’t bother to filter out the noise in my resume, which made relevant experience look like minor side projects. Its a funny process…you can’t lie, but you can’t tell the whole truth either.

This is exactly what I experienced on my first day with A-314 last year. I used it at a job interview at Planet Fitness. It was my last “real” job interview. Just like you said, rather than breaking the ice it was like building the ice. I guess people with a bit of authority don’t like feeling their status threatened

I’ve been pondering, and instead of a status or conflict problem, I think what gets in the way is the lack of “excitement”.

Preceding every job offer I’ve ever walked away with, there was positive energy, smiling, excitement, and ultimately a sort of personal connection forming.

On the other hand, thinking back to tone of the last two interviews, it was rather formal, serious, and distant.

Not saying that couldn’t work great depending on what kind of job you’re interviewing for…

But, I would say the crucial human element here is that people expect new things (whether products or people) to be exciting, or shiny, and they’ll more often than not find a way to be hypercritical if they’re not “feeling it”.

I think the usual shaky nerves during the interview process actually helps that excitement take form.

Kind of like being on a first date! You have to show a little vulnerability, or else you’re gonna be too distant to experience any chemistry.

I’ve never sensed any “vulnerability” component in the A314 toolbox that you could consciously grab hold of and project.

Before I started working for Androtics I went on a few interviews myself. What I remember from one, thank goodness I didn’t get it, was that the same type of results happened. My alpha-state was domineering and I got that vibe that the managers weren’t confident in themselves enough to have another confident male around. Not getting that job was a good thing because if the managers felt threatened by potential talent, it speaks really poorly of their management capabilities. A manager should LOVE to have someone just as capable, or even more so, than themselves. It adds value to the team and shows everyone they are comfortable with their own talent and thus thrive on others abilities as well. You should be thankful you’re not working for a person who is fearful as it will translate into a job of misery.

On another interview, which I did happen to get, it was just a better job all around. People were happy and ideas were encouraged. Unfortunately for them Androtics hired me the very same day .

Do not ever settle for less than a position that most importantly will make you happy. Work should not be about money, rather it should be about staying happy and creative. When you are in that state the money will flow anyway.

Right now it might seem like a difficult job market but you are smart enough to wear A314 so that puts you a cut above most others. The right job will come around and you will look back at those other interviews and be thankful and grateful where you are today. Best of luck to you
