So here in the UK, facebook, twitter et al are all being used to support invisible children’s campaign to rid the world of another mad man. Seen and read the links I’m posting here, but wondered what my cousins across the pond think, given invisible children is a US charity.
Thoughts boys & girls?
Obviously i’m sceptical about most things, and the nature of the charity is something to be considered, but it’s the intent of people wanting change and a different foreign policy. Millions of people marched against the war in Iraq; a conflict that as it turned out was premised under the veil of installing democracy, removing a horrible dictator and fictional WMDs. Millions of people marched and those people were ignored. A foreign policy from the bottom-up, instead of top-down shows the moral compass of the people it matters to most, both as citizens of a supposed democracy and to the child whose lives are ruined as a result of the conflicts in which they feature. I don’t think anyone can object to wanting to rid the world of the phenomenon of child-soldiers, inflated or not, it’s despicable. And I fundamentally disagree with the idea of it being a ‘White Man’s Burden’, I’d like to believe that it doesn’t matter where brutality of this magnitude occurs, Africa, Europe or the Moon: it should be stopped. Whether or not military intervention is the right solution is arbitrary, it shows governments that it’s people that comprise the nations they represent, and that government isn’t an end in itself.
