Thats pretty snazzy, I want to learn that fighting style too. I thought it was spelled Krav Naga.
As far as i know, it specializes in throws doesn’t it? And the Israeli Military is trained in it. With all the terrorism happening in that part of the world, They have to have a top notch military.
Krav Maga (Hebrew for “contact combat”) is the official self-defense and fighting system of the Israeli Defense Forces. It has been recognized as the most efficient self-defense system for real-life situations, emphasizing practical defenses against real attacks. Since 1964, Krav Maga has been taught to hundreds of U.S. law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians.
Krav Maga is a simple, effective self-defense system emphasizing instinctive movements, practical techniques and realistic training scenarios. Plus, because it’s based on a person’s natural reactions, it is easy to learn. You can become proficient in months rather than years.
The Krav Maga system incorporates fitness, self-defense and fighting like no other system. Krav Maga’s top-rated Fitness classes compliment training by toning muscle and dramatically improving strength and stamina. Krav Maga’s self-defense classes are a total-body workout that combines kicking, punching, street fighting, ground fighting, and defenses against weapons, getting students into prime physical shape. The total-body workout benefits of the Krav Maga self-defense and fitness system have been featured in publications such as Shape, Men’s Fitness, USA Today, US, and SELF, as well as television from CNN and Extra to The Today Show.

i’ve enver done it - but i think it’s bad ass, and you should totally do it.
unless you have a brazilian jujitsu studio around. grappling is supposed to be fun too.
not really my thing - i’m not real big on violent physical contact, but i have friends who do both.
I’ve studied Jujitsu before and NO grasshopper martial arts are a discipline not a violent way of communicating.
Now don’t make me have to come over there and HASAN CHOP your ass ![]()
oh i fully understand martial arts are a discipline. I jsut prefer internal arts to external. i guess inherently i prefer flying solo. prolly why my “sport” of choice is weight training.
I’m not familiar with trad jujitsu, but brazilian jujitsu is all about the grappling - me no likey.
I won’t lie tho - i really wish i’d taken up a weapons art when I was a youngun - i would love to be that chick that’s badass with a longsword.
Took a few classes when I was in Philadelphia, and now that I’m back in NY, I’m thinking abut taking it again. It was an unbelivable experience, I’ve taken Tae Kwan Do, and Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and I enjoyed Karv Maga more than any of them. Being that i was very out of shape (44yo who hardly ever exercises anymore), those classes had me huffing and puffing like crazy, but I learned some incredible self defense moves. A great total body workout.
I’ve since lost 30 pounds, and feel like I’m in better shape to start Krav Maga classes all over again. I liked it so much, I’ve read several books on KM, I was even going to get the Krav Maga insignia as my first tatoo. Highly highly recommended.![]()
Thanks Scott99! Looks like I’m heading over there to check it out in the next day or so. I’m excited. I need to loose about 30 more pounds too.
Too much love of Rum and pasta.
No problem Steveo, just a suggestion, maybe you should lose some of those pounds first. I didn’t, took a free introductory class, and I felt like I was dying. It didn’t stop me from going again, but it’s a killer.
I decided not to go again until I had lost some weight. I lost the weight by watching my calorie intake. I’ve lost 24 pounds since Jan 2nd (new years resolution), and 30 pounds over all since October, though I really wasn’t trying to lose weight from Oct-Jan. I came back to NYC in October, weighing 252, and I’m only 5’11". I’m now at 222. Hope to get to 180 eventually. Very tough losing weight at my age (44), and with my love of fast food and especially Italian food !!
Now I feel a lot better, and will start a work out regime, but probably won’t try Krav Maga until I work out for a couple of months, and lose 20 more pounds. It is really great though, I read a few books about it, and while doing it, you feel a natural high. It’s truly awesome.
I’ve lost about 115 lbs already by diet and excersise. Even though I can stand to loose some more weight I have always been a very strong man.
It might kill me, but I do work out 4 days a week so I’m willing to give it a shot.
Thank you for the advice.
I was totally messing with you. Think SteveO Jedi mind trick.
Did you just feel the Death Chop across your neck?![]()
You should be fine then. I went from ZERO exercise, to Krav Maga 250+ pounds, not a good idea, lol.
hon, i’m in the south - if i didn’t enjoy it, it never happened. ![]()
I have been practicing Aikido for about a year now and the difference has been like night and day. Before, I used to listen to some pretty sketchy stuff, music wise, as well as being kind of a bad boy. But now, since taking regular Aikido classes, I have more discipline. It is weird because within the first week of training, I subconsciously started listening to classical music. It was really quite scary for me, being way into some hardcore stuff. Also, I do not have the anti-social tendencies that I used to, like breaking the law! I think any discipline is really great, whether it be Karate (I have a brown belt), Aikido, or whatever…The more discipline and structure, the less the ID has to work with, which is super in my opinion, since that is what drives the self at a core and unconscious level in everyone.
I’m in the south too… That’s why it worked ![]()
Nice to hear from you again HH. Was wondering when you’d show up again. I’m glad you did with a great insight on my thread. Thanks
steveo,
You have always been super cool to me so I am only glad to reply on your threads! I always enjoy what you have to say and so far have not ever come to dispute your posts. Thank you very much my friend. I have been super busy with school being in my senior year, however i do try to log on every once in a short while to lend my experiences, such as they are. Best wishes to you and all of the phero community!

Krav Maga is awesome Steveo! I say go for it, I take up Hapkido; Korean cousin of Aikido sharing the same mother art of Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu; though I’m new at it I enjoy every bit of it as I love the conditioning needed to parcipate, the core values and morals thought about the art itself including always having self discipline and being able to gain and grasp more than just the physical aspects of the art itself. I love the wonderful Water virtue as it must alter and adapt to get around any object or anything blocking it. One reason I love Hapkido is because of it’s versatility that allows for being prepared for many types of attacks and situations. I also like it’s deceptive way of delivering moves and countering attacks, also I love it’s smooth flowing concept of delivering techniques. ![]()
How do you like Aikido Heinz Hummer, I’m sure both being practitioners of similar arts how did you like the basic stages or learning the falls and rolls first? It’s nice to know there are awesome members taking up an art! It’s also great to know that many are seeing both the mental and physical aspects and strengths of martial arts. ![]()
I say full speed ahead on things Steveo, do what you want to do and don’t let anything talk you out of it. Once you’re willing and determined to learn, you already won half of the battle right there.
Well, I practiced under the supervision of Sensei Michael Ward, a student and disciple of Master Wayne F. Tourda. Although only practicing so far for a little over a year, I have to say that i feel more animalistic, yet civil, as ever. Animalistic in the sense that I can almost perceive human emotion on a subconscious level, sometimes before said person says anything at all. Also, I can FEEL emotion, thus allowing me to avoid conflict, or subsequently smooth it over. When conflict is inevitable, I feel that Aikido lends me the fundamental techniques to bring conflict to a resolution, both quickly, and peacefully. Aikido centers one’s self, bringing into harmony the ID, the EGO, and the Superego, such that the harmony of nature becomes universal. Let it not be mistaken, Aikido is a martial art, however, when used by an efficient and adequately trained mind, Aikido becomes effortless, and thus releases the mind to become its own savior. The mind is about balance.
Falls and rolls are good…they beat you in the right places. But my sensei taught us to take a comprehensive view of the discipline. What is the purpose of Aikido, where did it come from, and where is the discipline going. All this, he taught us and took great pride in. I believe I am a better man for his extra effort, and I honor him.

EDIT: yeah I started when I was about 22 but it was off and on until recently.
Krav maga is one of the best things I have undertaken in my life. The physical aspect as well as the mental aspect. I find myself doing things menatlly that I would never have thought of that can save my life. It has really made me aware of my surroundings and able to better protect myself and others around me
