I’ve never been a fan of fraternities, yet I find myself inclined to join one recently.
I moved to Indianapolis and am having some trouble forming a solid social network. I did have some coworker friends but I had to leave that job due to poor wages. I also have a few friends from my hometown area, but have yet to meet up with them, and my best friend in the area works 2 jobs and plays computer games… zzzzzzzzz snore zzzzzzz
So I find myself in a city with few friends or outlets to find friends, and strong desire to go out and party. The clubs and organizations at my university don’t interest me, so I was pondering joining an academic fraternity where I can join a botherhood and form bonds in that mannor.
I’d would rather network through other means, but I’m not sure where to go about doing so. Classes are very condusive to making aquantances, but I’m looking to make friends.
Any ideas, or info on what it’s like in a fraternity? I’ve never been to fond of them.
I know what you mean. The best way I think of to find/make friends is to join a city sponsored activity, like soccer. It’s like a fraternity, but with both genders and no mono y mono issues. I was is on the city sponsored soccer team here and I met about. . .~40 ppl that way ^^. Indianapolis: What To Do: F. C. Pride Soccer Club
Regardless of social conditioning of what Fraternities are alleged to be about there are some serious social and business benefits.
You instantly build your social proof, have lots of parties to attend, meet tons of new people with most relationships lasting much longer than school. Who knows when the best friend in the frat turns out to be the heir of a restaurant magnet and Toil gets to be the head chef.
Plus the party’s and the women! Did I mention John Belushi was in a Frat in Animal House. Sheesh what more does a guy have to say!
Hey toil,
I don’t know too much about Fraternities but I would say give it a go- nothing to lose really. But don’t limit yourself to just joining them. Cast your net wide… You could try joining city/community-run sports clubs (like changazm said), dance classes, yoga classes, massage classes, etc. The beauty of all of these is that you are doing things for self-improvement and at the same time expanding your network… Other than that, I recommend living on campus (if you don’t already do so) in a dorm type environment for a semester - it gets boring after a while but there is no better way to make friends with a large number of people who are in the same boat as you…
Don’t underestimate the power of pheromones for making new friends. They are very useful in this department IMHO, but they probably won’t fake really hitting it off with people which keeps friends in the long term.
Remember pheromone-wise, things like Androstenol and Androsterone (the classic SOE combo) and Androstenol and P74 do a very good job at making people want to hang out again and buying you time to make new friends. Beta-Nol is great if you want less fun and more intimate/deep connections (but conversations can be quite serious though). I would avoid Androstenone and too much A314 as I find these can close people off (at least from what I’ve seen) from forming friendships with the wearer…
And I think it was the Japanese that bombed Pear Harbour not the Germans Steveo! BTW John Belushi was one of the kind!
