Location: singles’ event in a hotel conference room
Setting: friendly, fun-loving crowd
People: all ages
Time: 11:30pm to 1:30am
It was the day before Valentine’s Day, and I knew a perfect time to go to a singles’ dance. My friends were busy with their own plans, and most of them aren’t really into dancing, so I went n my own. I knew there wouldn’t be many people my age, but it was better than sitting at home, and the cost/benefit ratio was good enough to make it worth a try.
So I put on a whole cocktail of pheromones:
- 2 drops of A314 on the temples
- 2 sprays of TUTH on the temples
- 3 sprays of Instant Shine on the hair
- 1 spray of Spaceland on the front of the neck
- 2 drops of A1 (from LS) on the back of the head
- Some cover scent to mask it all
When I arrived at the hotel, I went inside and headed for the conference room. Now, this is where it started to get interesting.
**At the bar:
I decided to head to the bar to fuel up a little. The male bartender, who was middle-aged and Hispanic, seemed unusually absentminded for someone in a fast-paced service position. He kept clarifying my order multiple times (I had one domestic beer), miscounted my change, and seemed to fumble through words a little. At the same time, he was being very respectful the whole time. I gave a good tip, and acted courteous in return.

Older Caucasian woman:
I saw an older (40+) woman dancing by herself. So when a new song started, I went up to her, and asked her to dance. She said yes, and we began. It was something resembling swing, which she was able to follow pretty well. She said I was doing well too. After the song, she thanked me for the dance and went in a different direction.
African American woman who gave me her phone number:
The previous dance gave me a mild self-esteem boost, so I was looking for another person to dance with. I saw a 30-something African American woman dancing by herself when a salsa song came on. Like last time, I asked her, and she said yes. She complimented me on my salsa skills while we danced. After that, another song came on. I asked if she wanted to do another dance, and she said yes with a smile. Only it turned out to be a slow dance, and she pressed into me with full-body contact (not unlike two middle-schoolers at their first school dance). We danced for a few more songs, and she even introduced me to her friend (Caucasian, looking slightly younger), who seemed impressed by my dance skills. At the end, the woman gave me a full-body hug and went off with her friend to her car.
I stood outside the hotel briefly, while I smoked a cigarette to calm down a little. (Hey, I was wound up by the suddenness of the encounter.) Three people who walked past me, two tough-looking youths and a service worker, looked at me with a “what’s that guy smiling about!?” expressions on their faces. I didn’t care 'cause I certainly had an answer to that. I already talked to her on the phone, and I’ll call her again in a few days to set another date with her.
