This was originally in response to Thomas Lavoie’s post here regarding A314.
I think the purity of the food supply in Quebec may something to do with how bold the reactions are Thomas sees.
I can confirm that, despite his colorful personality, he’s not really exaggerating. I’ve noticed the same thing while in Montreal. Pheromone testing couldn’t be easier there. Some molecules that are elicit sort of “subtle” reactions in the masses in the US, tend to generate extremely overt reactions in Montreal.
Beyond the cultural differences, the thing that strikes me about this region, is how tightly food is controlled by government regulations. Many foods are grown locally, and under strict quality guidelines. It’s like the AOC regulations in France.
Here in the US, we have “health food” stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joes (half healthy, half fancy junk food) and their local equivalents, and lord knows the people in grocery stores like that react more to pheromones than they do at others. They’re high speed pheromone testing grounds where you can catalog a lot of reactions fast.
Maybe when a body gets more real food (old fashioned food), and less of the nearly synthetic corn derived stuff we’re find at typical “mass market” supermarkets, we do react more. When we “eat clean”, eat naturally, we must biochemically be more more like ancient humans, in a sense. Old fashioned humans certainly were more scent aware than people are today on diets of Doritos.
With the type of old fashioned food supply in Montreal and Quebec in general, I think you still have the benefits of this to a great extent. Except for the prevalence of farmed fish, that is. I couldn’t find wild fish (wild salmon) anywhere. I even heard it was illegal.
I suppose “fish farming” wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t farm the damn things in a stew of toxins, including mercury. I don’t know what kind of enormous fish bowl farmed fish are raised in, but I sure as heck never raised fish for pets in a toxic manner. I can’t understand why farmed fish meant for human consumption end up more toxic than those from the wild ocean. You’d figure in a controlled environment they could be more easily filter the water, control nutrients, etc.
