the modern college girl - a vignette?

The Thinking Housewife The Modern College Girl, a Creature of Silliness, Vanity, Malice, and Frozen Immaturity

I really like this posting, it show me that people are seeing, what I have seen since i was in high school.

I’m sorry to everyone I have to ramble here. I do not want to sound like Dr. Phil here. I understand that I’m only 25 and these opinions are my own.

I hate how people always blame the parent when two aspects must be sought after.

  1. The parent. 2. The children’s entourage

  2. There are some parents out there I just want to shake the crap out of them. I can understand how many people do not want to be like their parents, but I have found out a long time ago that the way my parents did it was the right way. If you want something get a job bust your ass and earn it. There is no if and’s or but’s about the last statement they only way to truly appreciate some thing is by earning it.

I have seen so many parents wonder why their kids do no respect them, well let’s see you give and give and give and give without expecting anything back. I understand the whole love concept but to truly love your child you have to know when to say no. I think many parents have forgotten this ever important concept. I can also understand wanting to give you kid a better life than you had, but the parents should tell their children that this life did not come free and that sacrifices where made to get to the place where they are today.

  1. The parents can only do so much to mold their child into a person who will succeed; their friends have a big if not bigger influence than then parents do on molding someone. I have to say in my experience I was a troublemaker in middle school, why? I felt like I had to do certain things to fit in with my trouble making friends. I was lucky unlike most kids today, when I reached high school I really did not care what people thought of me. I realized at an early stage in high school that in 4 years I would never see these people again, so why put on a front just to impress people? I found out the more I did not care the more people liked me because I was a genuine person not some façade like acted one way and was really other way.

I think that many kids do not want to be exceptional. They fear that if they are themselves that somehow people will make fun of them and treat them differently. I have an answer to all of those people who feel this way; this is a quote from me and I hope you all like it. “ignorance is bred by the masses and intellect is bred by the few”

I could go on and on but I feel this this is a good chunk of what I wanted to talk about.

Here in New Yawk there is great social pressure to be hip/urban/intense… these people pour in from everywhere and seriously consider themselves lifelong Manhattanites if they’ve sublet an apartment for two years…

Naturally taking their social cues from the hordes of neophyte ignorami who labor under similar delusions…

Real city people don’t talk like that… and it takes a long time before one begins to “get” New York… I’d put the estimate at around 30 years of non-stop residency before the hidden codes that distinguish the phonies and les arrivistes from the citizens…

I think the citizens see these people as the Athenians might see barbarian gawkers who rode in from the backwoods of the far northeast, somewheres out past Macedon where they communicate with burps and farts.

I have to whole-heartedly agree. As a 30 year “long islander” it is amazing how long island and NYC are their own “animals” and then there’s the rest of the world. That’s not to disparage everywhere else but there really is a completely different vibe/way of life/attitude when it comes to the NYC persona.

While I wasn’t there for very long, I arrived at the consensus that New York is primarily composed of assholes.

Generalize much?

at the risk of insulting you… don’t “hate on” the players of a game that you aren’t talented enough to play.

We prefer to think of ourselves as sphincters.

Honestly though, real city people are a fairly refined bunch… New York has become a magnet for hodads (interesting etymology, btw) who throw a surface presentation together while understanding next to nothing of the urban mindset… most of those bozos are fundamentally suburban (although I think something more is at work than being merely from the outlying territories, possibly a lifetime of television watching as opposed to watching and relating to people in real time)… not urban… :frowning:… the suburbs are a strange neither here nor there, neither this nor that social phenomenon… there is neither the intense compression of social life as in the core of cities, nor the self sufficiency (including to some degree the capacity to tolerate, and actually enjoy, periods of isolation)… the Yiddish expression “shnook” describes them well… they are shnooks to the max… unobservant, lacking deep curiosity about much of anything, needing to be entertained by imbecilic spectacles… they bring with them the entire psychology of the suburban mall... they walk like they’re moseying from outlet to outlet, no awareness of the trajectories and momentum of people moving around them, constantly stuffing their faces with thematic little snacks, awful sounding voices that resemble their cell phones, a sort of metallic grating monotone, photographing every pointless scene with pseudo-professional hunks of plastic and glass… mindless consumerism unleashed on this ancient turf… a pox on the lot of them.

very well said… you can always tell the “daytripper” walking around, especially during rush hour.
