Why can't I give rep points? The link only shows an error page

Ok, I did read steveo’s post for new users, and I did attempt to try to get others to answer this question for me, but to no avail.

I’m unable to distribute rep points for some reason. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but you do this by clicking the blue-link next to your established points, right? If so, it appears that it is dead - all I get is an ‘error page’ at the bottom of my browser. Does anybody know why that may be? I’d like to return the favors those who were kind enough to share reps with me. It sucks that this doesn’t appear to be working. I’m sure I’m missing something.

Thanks.

if you have repped them recently the system will make you spread rep points arounds firsts

Ok, thanks for clarifying that, although, I haven’t been able to rep anybody since joining pherotalk. Do I have to gain a certain amount of points before I can distribute?

Hey, good question. I’m not sure what might be the issue, but I’ll look it up with my VBulletin gurus and see what they say.

It doesn’t work when you try to click next to the rep-worthy user’s reputation point display?

You have to have 10 points in order to give rep. We all start with 9 and go up to 10 after a certain number of posts.

Mr. mindset has 22 (at this time) “Reputation” and a “Rep power” of 1 so he should be able to give a rep point out.

When I click on the blue number next to someone’s post I get a dialog box about adding or removing “reputation” (no error messages). You’d get something different if you click on your own rep point number (it tells you if that specific post got repped).

It seems you can only “rep” an individual once, then if you tryto rep them again within a certain time frame you are often told you “have to spread it around” (like manure?) first. I have a hunch one thing that “resets” this is when the repper’s “Rep power” goes up. Time may play a part as well. I don’t know the inner workings of the forum rep system I will admit. Just speculation.

Addenda: if you “hover” over the little boxes next to the “Rep power” number you get what appears to be a vBulletin default “cute saying” box. Not sure if these can be edited by administrators.

Sweet. Nope, it doesn’t matter if it’s my own or the person I’m trying to distribute points to. Btw, I get the message ‘error on page’ on the bottom left hand corner of my browser where the address of the link is usually displayed when clicked upon.

Thanks for clarifying that for me Carrie. So, I definately should be able to distribute points by now. One more question, does it matter if I go below 9? At one point I was down to 4 points, because of a controversial subject matter. :o

As far as I know, the only effect of going below 10 is that you can’t give/take rep points. You can still post, etc - you won’t vaporize  I guess it’s not like getting voted off the island.

Some posters (out of disdain for the rep system) have tried to entice others to liquidate all their rep points down to zero, but no one took the bait.

So anyway, yes you should be able to rep people now and I’m wondering if your brief sojourn into the darkside got your nonrepping status “stuck” somehow …

I noticed that I couldn’t use any of the functions over on the user side myself. Including sending PM’s or rep points.

I think with the server upgrade it’s been fixed.

Try it now and let us know.

I did try it, and unfortunately it’s a no go. I wonder if there’s preferences of some sort that may have caused my account to deactivate the ability to give reps. I use bodybuilding.com’s rep system, and I have no problem distributing over there, so I think it definately has to do with my account status/settings.

waiting to see if Jasmin comes up with anything

Do you have pop up controls on if you do it wont work.

Tisha

Thank you! That may be it, because I tried it at work just now, and it worked! lol. I don’t get it, though, because I’ve given rep points at the bodybuilding.com forums before with no problems. Oh well, I’ll see if that’s the problem when I get home tonight.

How do you read the comments for each rep? Just curious…

Click on User CP (left side of the forum navigation toolbar) and you’ll find it near the bottom of that page.

I have an active pop-up blocker on IE right now and I still can access rep window, etc. It does keep a new window from opening when I get a PM (unless I remember to turn the blocker off first).

Ok, it still doesn’t seem to want to work on my computer at home, however, the answer to my own question: right click on the blue link, then click on open in new window. So, I will be returning the favors to those in this thread, and for those who deserve them in the future. Thanks all!
