Do any of you identify with certain songs during different periods of your life to the extent that a song becomes a kind of a theme for you (or am I totally weird like that)?
If so, what are they and why?
My current song (well, it’s also been in rotation in the past, so it’s not “new”) is “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking?” by The Rolling Stones. Why? Well, this song has drug connotations, so let me start by saying that has nothing to do with it. This song oozes “approachable danger”, the feeling that the situation you are in could go anywhere, bad, good, etc. I’m very much an experience junkie and will often do things just for the sake of doing them. As the wise man once said, it’s better to regret things you have done than to regret things you haven’t done.
Here is the song set to a montage of scenes from the movie “Blow”:
So that’s my current theme song story. I want to hear yours!
It’s actaully fiunny to see this today, because just friday night I was at a club talking to a girl and the band was playing 70’s and 80’s tunes and I was telling her that certain songs take me back to specific times and places, and I cited a couple of examples of memories that a few of those songs drew out.
I can’t so much say that I see certain songs as themes for periods in my life, but I guess the times and places I’m taken back to are actually parts of various periods, so ???
Anyway, here’s kind of one of my favorites right now.
Selva, you are so weird. French is one of the sexiest languages i’ve heard and this guy’s voice is butchering it. BUTCHERING IT, I SAY! Watch, i’ll prove it. I’m going to show you a video where German sounds sexier.
Sorry, just teasing you a bit. But you have to admit, Xavier has one sexy voice.
As for my favorite songs, i’m afraid i can’t pick between two that i’ve been listening to ALOT lately, switching back and forth depending on my mood. So you lucky cats get to hear them both.
Yea, french is a sexy language, but his voice is husky and sexay lol you’ve got to listen to Daniel Lavoie though, I’d kidnap him lol Oh c’mon! he’s not butchering it!
Oh-la-la the german singer does sound sexy and sweet…mmmm
lol, I need to drink water now. Too many hot voices in my head.
My music taste is so eclectic that my favourite tends to be defined by my attitude at that period of my life. Probably the song that defines the ‘diamond’ brand is One Vision by Queen. Just recently it has been eclipsed by the Clash - Should I stay or should I go.
Who knows, in a couple of weeks it could be Thompson Twins - Doctor, doctor!
Not a song, but a whole album by a polish band named Riverside. Well, actually it’s a trilogy, so 3 albums - ‘Out of myself’, ‘Second Life Syndrome’ and ‘Rapid Eye Movement’…
It’s about a man who thinks he’s not enough for the world, for himself, that he cannot be loved. He breaks free from all relationsships to people he’s known and sets out to a journey to change himself. But he’s afraid that he won’t like the man he’s making out of himself. So these three albums describe his whole journey with all his self-doubts (in the end he finds back to himself and starts to love who he really is - a happy end so to say ).
Like a year ago I could totally relate to this - it was like a description of what I myself was feeling inside. It’s very emotional music, sometimes very sad.
Pink Floyds “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”. Oh man… Mesmerizing. I just can’t get enough of that song. Gilmour and Wright (RIP) put just incredible passion into a relatively simple to play piece of music. Lot of history for me with that song. I’ve been playing it for five years and still can’t get the right sound…
Here’s a live version of parts 1 - 5.
Or,
Lyle Lovetts version of the David Rodriguez song “Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy”
LOL! You know the funny thing is I didn’t even make that connection until about five mins after I posted that message. And then my thought was “hmmm I wonder if anyone would notice…”
