OK guys, I’ve recently had great fun watching 2 different classic movies that really struck a chord with the whole alpha male thing.
The Philadelphia Story (1940) is really well known and if you like classics at all you’ve probably seen it. The very high status Katherine Hepburn has her choice of three alpha characters to choose from. The secondary male characters are really interesting too.
Female (1936) is a movie that may be harder to come by but it is well worth hunting down. It’s a role reversal movie that really takes a hard look at who women are attracted to and why.
Watching either of these movies with an eye to what makes a high status woman tick is well worth doing. They are both also quite funny!
Sadly to the 20somethings, the values that made an “alpha” male in the 1930’s and 1940’s would appear “old fashioned” and/or “odd”. Sort of like the values from the 1840’s would seem “odd” to us.
I respectfully disagree Hazard…the mannerisms and idioms might be old fashioned but I think the attitudes are precisely what the pick up gurus are making their money teaching.
Women sometimes tell me I look a bit like Schwartenegger - if they’ve had a Cosmo or two.
One Cole Porter song (Anything Goes) had a line about women liking men “nowadays” who where just “silly gigelos” so maybe the styles change but the evolutionary imperatives remain the same.
