Dating (etc) internet sites

This subject was broached in a thread in the Women’s forum, but I thought it might deserve it’s own thread in the lounge area, where any and all can comment on their opinions and experiences with these types of sites.

Posts about actual experiences if possible. But opinions in general about these “services” would be welcome as well.

And maybe observations about what it is/was about the profiles that caught your eye. Are photos important? A good story? What felt “good” and what made you feel “no way!”?

No flaming please.

i was on match .

in 2 weeks i was seeing someone who saw my pic and contacted me.

this person and i continued to see eachother for a few months but decided we were better friends.

way too much in common-
same b-day too !!!

you have to have a picture up i think because it offers a hint of integrity to your profile.
not that you cant fake something, but they have to go to the trouble of faking, and i havent come across that yet.

well i’ve checked out dating sites, and they are good for expanding your network, and meeting people you wouldn’t normally cross pathes with, and i met some great guys, but something really has to be said for meeting people the old-fashioned way.

I met a lot guys that were great on paper, but in person, no chemistry whatsoever. For a long time, i’ve actually thought it comes down to pheromones and personal scent. lol and that’s one of those things that you can’t figure out over the internet.

and then there was one guy - who i was getting to know via email, and one day i got an email from his apparently live-in girlfriend, telling me how he was a drunk, and he cheated on her all the time, and he was a big old loser. that was enough of that for me.

I’m surprised Lor has time for internet dating, I’d think she’d have her hands full with regular dating.

Ha is so good to have advice from yous older ladies for best advice how to pick up man friend, if put yous nice nice photo up with touching up then maby yous get plenty man also interest width yous, hum much hoping also for your much success, keeping at it try hard and the older woman may be width much luck so good hunting be for you.

id reply but i know who you are.

I’ve got a profile up on Match.com right now though I am currently not “actively” searching right at the moment. Have too many things going on in my life right now… sale of house… move… Once that’s done, I’ll probably start up in earnest.

I like Match bette than Yahoo personals because it allows you to see at a glance how well your profile matches up against the other person’s in terms of preferences.

As far as specifics, photos are essential. Good ones. t’s been determined that you are 15 times more likely to get a response to your profile if you have a picture than you would if you don’t have one.

The essay is also important. I like it better when a person puts more effort into it than simply stating “I like this… I’m looking for that…”

Everyone does that. I like it when there is a bit of ‘personality’ or ‘spirit’ invested in it.

A profile is like a resume. All it does is give you the opportunity for an ‘interview’. A good one can’t get you a job by itself… but a bad one can certainly preclude you from getting one.

you are scoring many points in heaven for that charity

have you ever tried this stuff thr3shold?

not that anyone here needs it

seriously, i had my hands full with stuff at home and wanted to flirt even if i couldnt leave the house.

met someone i thought very quickly, and we could not have gotten along better. like too good. like anything more than friends would ruin it :frowning:

id do it again, but my focus is in my new hobby, and i cant seem to stop wondering if everyone here trying the same stuff i do has the same results, or if im a fluke.

oh i definately agree, Thalion, and the more you put into it, the more integrity comes across.

I tried Match for a while, sadly, the photos women in my age group put up were from 10 years and 30 pounds ago.:open_mouth:

You see… I’ve NEVER understood why people do that. I mean sure… maybe you can fool someone until you meet.

But then what happens? At that point, your credibility and integrity is destroyed.

What’s the point?

Perhaps they think they can “power through” it if you actually meet them.

alot of people do that Mtnjim, they put up the best pic they can find of themselves, and then have to explain that its a 10 year old pic!

i think everyone should use the opposite strategy, and use a mediochre pic.
if they like that one, then it only gets better.

i knew some i saw on match-

i had to laugh because they portrayed themselves “flashier”. not better or worse, just “next to a hotrod” or “on a cruise ship”

And there’s nothing really wrong with that. It gives others a better picture as to what you enjoy doing. I see pictures of people in faraway places and things like that too.

Some people do that to try and give themselves a bit more ‘status’, and if that’s what they want to do… then more power to them.

It’s important to realize that there is no ‘perfect’ profile. Different things are going to appeal to different people. It is really important to write your profile (or include appropriate photos) to appeal to the kind of people you WANT to appeal to.

Those sites are fun … if you’re bored, it’s a good place to play. After living on this big round ball for many years, I’m beginning to believe that there’s no such thing as a happy couple, UNLESS both are truely into God.

Does anyone know anyone that’s happily married? Happy and settled are to very different things btw.

I find that any relationship that last past 6 months is worth trying to invest in, 'cause 3-6 months, to me, is LUST’s shelf life. I’ve been a good man most of my life, and after my last experience, I think the best site for me is ADULT FRIEND FINDER … can’t believe I posted there in my B’day suit :open_mouth: , but …

Still, to me, the internet dating sites are the places you find those that pretend to be something that they are not … Land of Hollywood; and we all know, smiles are not real in Hollywood. If you understand people, time with will always show you what you’ve found, no matter how good they ACT.

Be careful and keep your fingers crossed, 'cause there are some hurting, ugly, and some lost people in every site.

Couldn’t agree more.

There you go. Just because you clicked onscreen doesn’t mean sparks are gonna fly face to face.

And don’t get me started on textual misrepresentation…

Yeah, but not too good. An overly-flattering headshot ain’t gonna serve you in the long run. You don’t wanna walk into the audition and have the casting director go, “who the hell are you?!”

I agree that no pic is a major red flag.

You mean I shouldn’t put up a picture of me standing next to my roadster?

Also, a lot of women who use Match in my age group are truly desperate.:o

I’m telling you it’s all about the smell. lol

you know actually - this is one of the reasons I miss NYC so much. Far more upfront and human interaction then in the more car-bound cities.

wow, i must be a nice person magnet on those sites then.

i have yet to meet a weirdo.

2 of the nicest (and genuine, i have met them in person ) people i have ever met i met there.

1 i never met, but i keep in contact with him regularly, for almost 2 years now.

maybe you get what you expect to find there, i dont know.
maybe i just got lucky, that could be ,too.

oh hellll no, definately put the pic up of your roadster !!!

the point i was making was that i knew the ones being flashy .
they are not that way in everyday life :stuck_out_tongue:
