Dating Maven

LaurieNY asked me where I’m meeting all the men who are pursuing me. Online. I’ve used Match and Yahoo, and I alternate. I’ve done well with Yahoo for awhile, so I’m on yahoo. My ad has a GREAT photo (cited in my avatar) and is short and interesting.

Yes, the photo is the MOST important part since men are so strongly stimulated visually.

All the best,

April

…Really? Wow.

Thanks for the info. My friend in Jersey is on Match and has met a few sweet ones, but nothing explosive yet, from what I gather.

I met my current love on match.com, actually.

Over the past few years, in between relationships, I have been on several of the dating websites, and have met a lot of really nice men. Met some psychos, too, though…you just need to make sure that you have your psycho meter set on high when you start talking to them…some of them have really strange agendas…overall though, as long as you are careful, it is a great way to broaden your horizons and meet new people…

From a guy’s perspective, I agree that a photo can be real important. Picture worth 1000 words and +all that. We are very visually oriented, despite what some claim (Playboy really doesn’t sell for it’s articles…, although there have been some good ones.)

(I tried match for a few months but didn’t make any connections for a variety of reasons. For one thing… very few nearby hits. Guess I was too picky.)

My opinion.

I met my wife on match.com.

She didn’t post a photo.

I dated a couple guys I met on match.com. They were psychos. I haven’t used a dating site since because I didn’t think it was worth the money.

OKCupid is free.

Yeah … my wife is ok with psychos.

Ok after having read this post, I think I need to branch out and look at Match and Yahoo, I must be missing all the fun!!!
Knowing my luck though I would end up with ALL the phychos!!! LOL!!!
Mind you I did well on the faces thingy, I got 32, but I am so gullible when it comes to talking to people!!! I believe everything!!! And I am a pushover for hard luck stories!!!

I just joined a Yahoo group for childfree singles. We’ll see if that pans out. I’m looking for someone under 35, and I’m not sure if someone local in that age range is too much to ask, but it’s worth a shot. Finding decent, family-oriented guys who don’t want kids is no easy task. :frowning:

Man, you just described me! I am looking for decent family oriented gals who don’t want kids and as I am nearing thirty I am finding it more and more impossible. Atleast you give me hope. Thanks!

Anytime, dear. I know people like you and me are out there, it’s just so tough to know when to bring it up…you don’t say it on the first date, but you don’t want to get too attached to someone who wants a different future. It’s really difficult.

Just try being a guy in his 50’s… I went “within 1000 miles” on match and got maybe 5 “hits.” Got zero hits on just about anything less. And I did indicate (for myself) “doesn’t want children.” Tried for 6 months.

Wow. Are your searches a little too specific, maybe? Or is “no kids” your only stipulation?

There are lots of women out there who have chosen to remain child-free. I’m one of them and I’m in my 40s. I’m sure there are quite a few men too, but I get the impression there are more women than men making this life-choice.

There seem to be a lot of “child-free” groups on LiveJournal and the like, although one or two I have seen are a bit, shall we say, excessively vitriolic about children for my liking.

For myself, I do not dislike children, I like kids - I just don’t want to have any of my own.

It’s amazing how many people just don’t get that. They seem to think if you don’t want to have children you must hate them.

nbully79, you just described me too. Maybe in the future, yeah, but certainly not now. Too busy trying to get some kind of financial security in a field that feels like shifting quicksand. How can anyone afford kids now?!

Another one over here. Hi! I was beginning to think the same about women. A lot of them around my age are starting to feel a little broody. Pity too many guys my age are in my situation; we feel we can’t give them what their instincts are starting to demand.

I’ve seen a few, but most give reasons as opposed to blind vitriol. Overpopulation, a feeling that the world is going to pieces and they don’t want to bring a child into it, money, money, money. Did I mention money? They like children, and they would quite happily reproduce - they just feel that they can’t.

This used to describe me to a T, but I’ve had such a shift in perspective in the past year that if a guy came into my life and already had kids, I’d consider taking them all on as a package deal.

I agree with you, May, in your comment that if you don’t want to have children people think you must hate them. One of my friends is a man in his mid-30’s who adamantly does not want kids, and he’s been called so many kinds of selfish that it’s actually funny. He’s one of the most generous, kind, giving people I’ve come across. He just doesn’t want to have kids. It seems to me that someone who knows this and acknowledges it is more responsible than selfish.

I’m almost starting to think my criteria were too liberal! On many questions I did a “doesn’t matter” type answer.

I did specify more of a “moderate” level when it came to smoking or alcohol use. I’m not big on either (although one of my current fave targets is a heavy smoker).

I was also looking for people in the over 30 catagory. And many of those “hits” when I checked their profiles, were looking for men no more than about 5 years older than they. As I’m in 50’s I figured that much of a gap would be pushing it. I needed someone more open.

Well, you didn’t specify a maximum age, so that seems like a pretty wide category to me…I don’t know; I would think that the more liberal one’s criteria, the more hits one would receive, right?

I think I specified an upper age of about 50 (don’t recall exact numbers as it was over a year 1/2 ago).

I kept “loosening” the criteria as I went hoping to increase the number of hits, but little came of it. It could have been a poor filtering system on match’s part. I was getting some “hits” that didn’t match my listed criteria AT ALL so I wonder…

I decided to try it the old fashioned way for a while, ie actually just meeting someone in person somewhere on the street or at an event, but I can take a 2 mile walk to the downtown Post Office and not meet or see a soul (except for some driving by) and “social” events are near non-existant here. There are no “clubs” (don’t like em anyway… been to some big-city ones). Most other “family” events I try are attended by, suprise!, families (Mom, Kids, and Pop). Grocery stores are the same. Mom and a trail of antsy children (which means a) probably married and b) too stressed out by squirming whiney children to want to talk to you).

When I do spot a group of obvious singles they are usually all High School or younger age. The 35 to 55 age group is very very very scarce.
