I’ve had that nagging thought and fear that all of our digital lives are usually store in a hard disk, DVD, or on the ‘cloud’… but, what if the hard disk crashes or the ‘cloud’ evaporates…??? What do you do???
How about a permanent, that is hundreds of years, storage of MY… Videos, Music, Pictures, Notes, writing… etc. How would I accomplish that…
Then I found…
Do you think this would be useful to you? Yea or Nea, why???
The archives only need to last a few more decades as far as I’m concerned. If some of my kin would like to preserve it longer, that’s gonna be their problem. I’ll be dirt in the ground. I won’t give a shit.
Problem with current DVD archiving is precisely that… They normally won’t last the decade… If you decide the Hard drive route… well, that could also go kaput on you within 5 years… You use the cloud… failure in your host… your DOA…
A storage medium that would last a few decades… I’m all for that, for sure, Misein… that’s in my lifetime, I get that. But, I haven’t found anything that would accomplish that…
Yeah, I know. All hardware seems to break sooner rather than later but I’ll trust junk I keep at my home rather than some host who can go belly up at any time.
At least disks cost less and less. Even external 2 TB drives can be found dirt cheap nowadays and I think that’ll be the solution. External hard drives that aren’t being used daily but just as back up aren’t very likely to break any day soon. And no matter how much digital junk I hoard, I’ll be able to afford the back up drives at the rate their price is going down.
Yeah, I can see that too but in the first post we were talking about our personal stuff. I gave up burning onto DVD a long time ago and instead have several hard drives, some for storage and regular use, some for back up only.
See these milleniata discs and their burners aren’t gonna come cheap. At first, that is. Just like writeable cd’s (and later dvd’s) they’ll cost a fortune in the beginning but probably will be real cheap after some years.
I’ll see what these run… I may be able to sway our company to look into these and try them out myself…without paying for them…try them out on the company dime…
If I’d only need to secure my private, really personal stuff, that wouldn’t be a big problem if I only got hold of one or two everlasting discs of a few GB each. But if I want to secure my whole cd and dvd collection of music and movies, it would be a chore to burn it all and it would take more discs than any company would be willing to give up for free.
That’s why I still think back up hard drives rule.
I was watching the original show “Life After People”, seems the more advanced our methods of storing information get the less likely they are to last. DVD’s will lose their information sooner than paper books…so I store all my notes by carving info into stone tablets. I figure the Egyptians did it and it lasted some 5 thousand years. Beat THAT milleniata.
I’m setting up a computer system at home and the most secure storage I know of is a NASwith RAID, probably RAID 6. Sure it costs some to set up… Or you could go with Dispersal if you’re a bit more paranoid
Basically, this milleniata IS carving out the surface of the DVD Hybrid media. Now, if you don’t mind the LOW capacity of a few kilobytes of information on a stone tablet, hey, that’s a tried and true method!
The tablet can be of any size, so the capacity is pretty much endless. However the write speed effectively cripples this technology and it lacks support for audio and video, so it won’t be a hit anymore.
