Favorite Westerns

OK, anybody here wanna talk westerns? I honestly never considered myself a fan of westerns and then a couple of years ago, I went on a John Ford and Howard Hawks jag and I then I started thinking of all the westerns I’d secretly loved as a kid (note my mentioning the very obscure Evil Roy Slade TV movie in the cartoon and TV show thread) and I realized that I’d been lying to myself all those years.

So let’s talk in detail about these movies… Bells, you got any favorites?

Movies or TV shows?

Blazing saddles? not sure that is a western, but it is a partial horse opera. They just could never make a movie like that now.

I like Silverado, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, 310 to yuma.

As for TV shows, I watched Six gun heros, quite a bit as a kid.

We can talk about movies and TV shows. Many of the TV shows would more likely be considered horse operas than true westerns, but it’s all fun.

Tell me what you like about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, woofie!

Movies: High Noon, Destry, Destry Rides Again, Bad day at Red Rock

TV: Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Bonanza, Wild Wild West (much better than the movie)

High Noon movie for sure. True Grit maybe.

TV: who could forget the Cisco Kid? Lone Ranger? Have Gun Will Travel!

And yeah, Blazing Saddles… (“saddles don’t blaze…” [from ad spot])

Jim, interesting observation about Bad Day at Red Rock. I’ve never thought of it as a western, but now that you mention it, it could almost be a modern day western (plays like one, as I think about it), and the title sure sounds like a shoot 'em up!

Wow, two votes for Palladin! The original man in black.

“Ah Cisco, Ah Pancho”

Blazing saddles get two thumbs up - western or not… it was fricken funny

~Haz~

Outlaw Josey Wales, Young Guns 1 and 2.

Ya, I forgot about that one. JW was dieing when he made that one (left lung taken out 1964)

Hmmm…yep. Funny you should ask.

I’ll start with TV. There are so many. By the end of the sixties they had pretty much worn out this genre, for the general public, I mean. There are never too many good ones for me. I love cowboys…and Indians.

Lots of good ones mentioned already. I’d never miss Gun Smoke or Have Gun Will Travel…Richard Boone was the Bomb.

Here goes -

Cheyenne - Clint Walker…swoon worthy

The Rifleman - Chuck Conners

Wyatt Earp - Wayde Preston

Rawhide - Clint Eastwood, of course.

Bronco - Ty Hardin…“Show me a girl who’s kissed him once and I’ll show you a girl who’s kissed him twice.”

Lancer - James Stacy as Johnny Madrid/Lancer. I always loved James Stacy. He was hot. He had an unfortunate accident at age 36, a car accident I believe, and lost the use of his legs. Despite his disability he continued to act, off and on, for a number of years.

Maverick - James Garner…another fav

Laredo - Neville Brand, Peter Brown and remember one-eyed Jack Elam?

Wanted Dead or Alive - not the best western series I ever watched but it starred Steve McQueen. Do I gotta say anything else?

More obscure -

Yancy Derringer - Joch Mahoney

Destry - John Gavin

Lawman - John Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Eddie Byrnes ( Kookie - 77 Sunset Strip Strip ) Hey Robbie, lend me your comb?

Branded - Chuck Conners

Who could forget The Lone Ranger and Tonto or Guy Williams as Zorro? Of course, you’d have to be old enough to forget…lol

Death Valley Days - Borax Detergent, anyone?

Jim Bowie

Fort Apache

Rin Tin Tin :open_mouth: - God help me. I swear, on my mother, I was an embryo.

The list goes on… :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I’m plum tucker out, pardner…whew.

Bella

Oh! This one I could never forget. The best recent western series I’ve seen is Deadwood. Sadly it only ran three seasons.

Run and rent this one.

The Searchers
High Noon
Unforgiven
Red River
The Wild Bunch
My Darling Clementine
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
Blazing Saddles
Deadwood

#1… period.

Holmes, we could just stop there.

Now I’m damn sure we had a cowboy around here somewhere!!

“That’ll be the day…”

Ya, great one I forgot about.

From the movie.

Your age is showing.

Even got to go and see the Lone Ranger movie.

Never missed it.

Ya, right  I wanted to be the kid.

Well, of course you do, Indians are running around… mostly naked.

Yeah, and I loved Neville Brand in The Untouchables too. But I was just a zygote at the time…

Very clever!

Yeah, most people remember GW as Will Robinson’s dad.

That creates quite the image…

At The Searchers? That’s my favorite western!

MIA…saddle sore?

LMAO. Touche`

I like Kevin Kline in anything. Remember Redford as Jeremiah Johnson? I haven’t seen 310 to Yuma, yet, but I’m a Russel crowe fan. He first came to my attention in LA Confidential.

Who’s age is showing?

What can I say? I appreciate a well tailored loin cloth.

How about The Shootist. The Duke’s last film with Lauren Bacall and Ron Howard.

More Duke -

The Cowboys

The Alamo

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - with Jimmy Stewart

aaand… The Spoilers - with Randolph Scott and Marlena Dietrich

Anything with Clint Eastwood. Pale Rider comes to mind. The Young Guns boys are hot.

Shane - Alan Ladd

The Gunfighter - Gregory Peck

Once Upon a Time in the West - the first movie Wolf asked me to watch with him. Little did he know.

Oh Robbie, you’ll like this…on our first date he took me to see Raging Bull …lol. Love of films is something we have in common. He figured that out one night when I wanted to watch…Come Back To The Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. That’s when I discovered Cher could actually act. Yeah, Cher. I know…lol.

Here’s one for ya…The Traveling Executioner - Stacey Keach

The Last Picture Show - Cybill Shepard

The Misfits - Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift and Marilyn Monroe. This was the last film, each completed, before they died.

I’ll leave you with… Cat Ballou - Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin ( best actor Oscar ) Michael Callan…yum… and Dwayne Hickman ( Dobie Gillis :open_mouth: )

Bella
