If I invite the person to dinner, I always make sure that I make arrangements for payment in advance.
No, I don’t have flowers delivered for every dinner date, nor a capella groups performing table side, or crystal goblets to keep; but I do try to make an effort to make every dinner special, somehow.
Often, it’s just working out something with the kitchen in advance: an off-the-menu appetizer or dessert. Especially dessert, because so many people say they don’t want to order dessert – either they are trying to spare your wallet, or they are making an effort to control diet and don’t want some enormous sugar monster to be plated in front of them. But a small (shared) sweet ending to a dinner often “feels right.” (But not if your guest really is struggling to make/keep weight.)
Just for fun: most better Greek restaurants have lamb testicles battered and ready to fry, a well-loved appetizer, but one that almost never makes it into print on the menu in the USA. They are often ordered as “sweetbreads” (though, strictly speaking, only the thymus and pancreas of an animal under 1 years old are true sweetbreads.)
Or, if it’s a big night on a tight schedule (dinner followed by a performance with a definite start time) then I might make sure the head knows this, and I preorder an apertif + appetizer to save time.
The gestures don’t have to be big, just graceful … even whimsical: $4 of chiffon material draped to turn a chair into a Throne, a $3 sparkly comb as a Tiara, and a waiter who played along and used “Your Highness” all through the evening – that was a riot! Even grownup girls like to play Princess sometimes.
I have a black tanned leather ‘belly’ … very soft, like glove leather, a couple feet square. I plan to dose it with some Instant Honesty and use it at a prop for a dinner next Month with a slightly kinky theme, lol.
If you invite someone to dinner and don’t have fun, I’d say it’s your fault. For me, a dinner is always susceptible to being “a production”, just a little bit larger than life. Perhaps it’s because I’m a foodie, heh!
Maybe I should write the e-book. ![]()
