Fragrances with food associations more popular ?

The older school of perfumery was florals for women, and resinous for men, with some variation on the theme permitted. Now there is a middle way that opens the gustatory wavelength… the suggestion is dining, shopping for food, orchards, with more earth, less rare floral…

Chocolate has become a great success…

Amour de Cacao by Sud Pacifique is supposed to be a winning “power cocoa” of grand deliciousness…

and in men’s fragrances,

Terre de Hermes has some of the old school pine-fir resin, combined with an earth and a dried orange peel…

Strange things, too… hypothetical flowers and fruits that never existed except in the perfumers imagination… some almost offputting or confusing at first…

Parfumerie Generale has a fragrance with a core of cannabis… maybe not the best idea to wear during international travel…

The herbal scent of pot has got more than one babe hot, I kid you not.

But, then… once the moment of confusion passes, they hold the attention for an extra minute…

Then also there are the new pepper scents from L’Artisan, Hermes (hermessence)…

Do you post on basenotes, or have any favoured posters whose reviews you trust?

Basenotes is good fun, if often pedestrian… the best niche ideas are seldom discussed in favor of the same 12 or so, ad infinitum… perfumery is big business, a conservatism not unlike the making of Hollywood movies enters the dynamic… there there are a few brilliant independant filmmakers… the second one strikes the unexpected note, the audience is narrowed by one hundred fold… the crazy genius stuff rarely sees the light of day, perfumers must have such things in their laboratories they love, and no testing panel would ever accept… like, I recall a flower that smelled like a cooking steak ! Soil just struck by lightning ! Old corks from vintage wines… I do have a new thing, purchased a few months ago, the most ceramic-mineral scent, like redwood and stones… tomato leaf is big now… planty…

I think the food association thing works both ways. It can suggest sumtousness and comfort, but the popularity for women’s scents to smell like candy and frosting, is, IMO, a BIG set back to when women were stuck in the kitchen. I have no problem using domesticity and maternal compassion as a lure or role when the situation is right, but I have a hard time taking a woman bathed in pink frosting scent seriously. Furthermore, the fact that men find these blatantly juvenille and/or overly-feminized scents appealing is frightening. What happened to the sassy woman wearing a chipper little leather chypre? Isn’t that more exciting than some double-DD (fake) botox-injected airhead with a gingham apron and white stripper shoes on playing games in the kitchen?

heh…like ferran adria, but for perfume.

I don’t personally associate anything at the start of that string with gourmand scents. I cook. My friends cook. I love how some herbs and spices smell, especially compared to the chemically scents usually used as perfumes. Food is a pleasant, sensual shared experience.
