How do I dilute concentrated pheromones?

Hey, I have concentrated estratetraenol (5 mg/5 mL) and concentrated androstanone (5 Mg/5 mL, but I wonder if that is a misprint, because that would be VERY concentrated) I wish I could dilute these so I can dose them, especially since I like knowing how much pheromone it takes to get a reaction. I am thinking about placing an online order with an ebay seller who sells atomizers that look exactly like the to-go atomizers as well as funnels and graduated pipettes.

Anyway, nbully gave me a great tip about how to dilute the estratetraenol (thanks, I would rep you if I could) and I’m wondering about how to dilute the androstanone. Is the concentration sound right? They have the CAS number printed on the label, so I might be able to look it up. Plus, I only have 190 proof ethanol, but I’m certain that is technical grade instead of perfumer’s alcohol, like what I should probably use. That and ethanol absorbs directly into the skin, so I’m not sure that is a good idea, even if the amount used is small, so I’m also thinking about ordering a 30 mL bottle from androtics with a diluent in it. Any suggestions as to whether I should use Perfumer’s alcohol or Diporpylene Glycol? I would like something that diffuses very well, and I think I also want it as unscented as possible so I can cover it with a perfume oil. I guess I could also try diluting it in one of my ethanol based perfumes.

Sorry about all these questions and chemistry terms. Any confirmations for my technique and suggestions for diluting these pheromones is welcome.

I just looked up the concentration for the androstanone. It said 1 mg for every 1 mL, but the 5 mL vial was not included in the list. Would anyone even sell a pheromone with a 5 Mg/ 5 mL concentration for a decent price :confused:

They are sold at 1 mg/ml concentrations.

You can dilute with ethanol.

Alternatively you can use a perfume or cologne of you choice to dilute.

I went into technique a bit in my recent post The Basecoat Approach .

5 mg / 5 ml is the same concentration as 1 mg / 1 ml. It just means that for every ml of solution you have, there is 1 mg of estratetraenol or androstanone dissolved in it. So if you have 5 ml in a vial, you have 5 x 1 mg/ml = 5 mg of pheromone in the vial. 1 mg/ml concentration roughly translates into 150 mcg/spray concentration, if that helps makes it easier to relate to Androtics’ products concentrations.

The Androtics store sells graduated plastic pipettes. As for atomizers, check your local hair care products supply store for tubes with spray nozzles.

Ethanol and perfumer’s alcohol is good for situations when you want the option to spray on clothes as well as skin. DPG is not recommended if you wear delicate clothing that you don’t want stained since it has a higher viscosity and thickness than alcohol, so you would have to stick to strictly spraying on skin or hair. Also, DPG has a tendency to cause skin irritation, so be careful and check how you react to it first before you decide to use it.

It doesn’t say 5 mg/ 5 mL. It says 5 Mg/ 5 mL. mg is 10^-3 grams while Mg is 10^6 grams, which is 1,000 kg, and with a rough guesstimate of 2.2 lb per kg. . . well. . . you get the idea . I’m certain it is not Mg because that is physically impossible in 5 mL of solution. . . unless I’m just being plain dumb.

I’m lil bit confuse here…1000kg is 1 metric tonne, is about the size of a compact Japanese car!

nbully gave me a very good idea about how to dilute the estratetraenol with a to-go atomizer in my post Estratetraenol notes. If I put 1 mL of the pheromone with 4 mL of diluent, then I can have a 25 mcg/spray pheromone, and 1 spray would probably work in most situations. I’ve looked at atomizers in drugstores, but they aren’t the same as the to-go, while these look exactly the same. I haven’t looked in the hair care stores. Are they the same as the to-go bottles? It would be handy not to have to put an online order in. I make tons of those already :slight_smile:

Here’s what I’m talking about:
eBay Store - Accessories For Fragrances: Funnel - 28mm, Funnel - 34mm, Funnel - 55mm

Thanks for your input on perfumer’s alcohol and dipropylene glycol. I think I’ll go with the perfumer’s alcohol from androtics, cuz I know Jas loves the business as well as my results with these pheromones :wink:.

Yeah. . . and unless I’m doing my calculations completely wrong (which I have a tendency to do with mental math late at night) you can see why I’m dubious about that concentration. But I did look up the metric conversions in my chemistry book and I am certain that 1 mg is 10^-3 while 1 Mg is 10^6 and 1 kg is 10^3.

Well, Miss Tomboy,:smiley: the US and British system of calculation has a lil bit difference. I guess both of them are confuse like me and can’t get along well!!:smiley: (Just kidding!!:stuck_out_tongue: ) For example: 1 British gallon = 4.546 liters
1 American gallon = 3.785 liters

1 Milligram is actually 1/1000 grams, it means that in 1 gram you have 1000 milligrams. Mcg is divided into another 1000 times, can someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

There’s no way it can be 1 Mg (1 megagram, or 1000 kilograms). Dissolving a solute into a solution doesn’t change its mass since mass is a physical constant (quantitative measure of matter), so the resulting solution would have a mass of 1000+ kilograms. Also, there is nowhere near even enough solvent to supersaturate the solution - it would be the equivalent of trying to dissolve 2200 1 lb bags of sugar in 5 ml of water :open_mouth: Finally, since pheromones cost so much to synthesize, 1000 kilograms would be worth a fortune! (For example, if 1 milligram of estratetraenol costs $50 to synthesize, 1000 kilograms would cost $50,000,000 :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ).

Most likely it’s just an error on the labeling on the vial. Who’s the manufacturer? Is it a chemset product?

As for using perfumer’s alcohol to dilute your estratetraenol, check with Jasmin to make sure it has no excessive scent if you’re planning to mix or cover with other perfumes to avoid clashing scents.

For diluting your estratetraenol or androstanone, just use a simple proportion calculation. Since both your supplies for both are at 150 mcg/spray concentration, use the following conversion:

Y parts Estratetraenol or Androstanone, Z parts dilutent = (150 mcg/spray x Y) + (0 mcg/spray x Z)] / (Y + Z parts) = 150/(Y+Z) mcg/spray

In short form, this gives you:
1 part EST or AND, 1 part dilutent ===> 75 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 2 parts dilutent ===> 50 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 3 parts dilutent ===> 37.5 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 4 parts dilutent ===> 30 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 5 parts dilutent ===> 25 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 9 parts dilutent ===> 15 mcg/spray
1 part EST or AND, 14 parts dilutent ===> 10 mcg/spray

Good post, good info!!:slight_smile:

Very good and clear explanation!

The 150 mcg/spray number of course comes because we know that the 30 ml Androtics bottle gives 200 sprays. If it were full of the original solution we get a per/spray dosage of:

V*C/S = per/spray dosage
(30 ml)(1mg/ml)/(200 sprays) = 150 mcg/spray

where
V = volume of bottle
C = concentration of solution you’re starting with
S = number of sprays you counted to empty the bottle

In the case of a bottle with a different sprayer volume the numbers will change somewhat.

For instance, for an 5ml Androtics to-go bottle that gives 40 sprays you get

(5 ml)(1mg/ml)/(40 sprays) = 125 mcg/spray

for the starting solution.

From there you can apply the same type of proportional calculation as above.

ie if you dilute 1 part original solution to 1 part carrier the new concentration is

c1 = c0/2

where c1 = new concentration and c2 = original concentration

and the new per/spray volume becomes

(5 ml)(1mg/ml)/(40 sprays)(2)] = 62.5 mcg/spray

if you dilute 1 part original solution to 2 parts carrier

c2 = c0/3

(5 ml)(1mg/ml)/(40 sprays)(3)] = 41.7 mcg/spray

and so on to complete another table of dilutions.

This generalises the technique to to any type of bottle with a sprayer of high enough quality to give consistent spray volumes, and also to any starting concentration.

Phew! I knew I did that calculation wrong. I realized it when I just woke up this morning :o.

Hooray for math nerds! :cool:

Thanks for all the info guys. Hooray for math nerds! :cool:

Anyway, about how much androstanone does one typically wear to get noticeable reactions? Maybe about 25 mcg? I tried looking in past forums and none of them really said a dosage. One did say 12.5, but it was mixed in with other pheromones. (Keep in mind this is androstAnone, not androstEnone)

10 mg/spray and one or two sprays works for me.

I use this as a component in mixes and it seems to tone down the -none a bit. I haven’t done much with it by itself.

Results may be quite different for a female.

Thanks. I was just about to post that I finally found a thread where someone thought 12.5 was a little much, so I think 10 mcg/spray (anyway, I’m assuming that’s what you meant :wink:) would be the best bet. I think I’ll make some for myself and give my boyfriend some and see how it differs on males and females. He doesn’t know I use pheromones yet, so I’ll have to see if I can get him into it :smiley:.

Sorry. I just realized I forgot to answer your question. Yes, it is chemset.

You’re getting better at reading the meaning behind typos!
