I just saw an ad for a "de-ionized water" miracle cleaning agent... ?

Is this thing for real?

This woman is selling her Ion-A-Clean spray, which is just de-ionized water.

She claims its all-natural, safe, and will pretty much remove any stain. My spidey sense is tingling?

*]
Get this, this chick has co-written the For Dummies book on cleaning, has written a couple cleaning books of her own, and has all her products on a few home makeover shows. She’s well credentialized, but this all just seems so… bogus?

sounds fishier than a can of tuna to me.

with extra mercury added in for flavor

I see this type of thing all the time.
Anyone game to try it?

*“Ion-A-Clean is colorless, odorless, ionized, deoxidized water that has been electrolyzed using a patented method. This patented process permanently alters the atoms in water resulting in negatively charged ions.”
*Altering the atoms to create ionized water molecules is patently absurd. Ionized and deionized water nomenclature comes from the dissolved ions in water, not ionic water molecules. If you have excessive metallic ions in your water you get ‘hard’ water, ‘soft’ water comes about when most of the ions are sodium. This is definitely worthless tripe.

"deoxidized water"

That would be Hydrogen gas.

Remember H (hydrogen) 2 O (oxygen) is the formula for water.

My wife saw a demonstration and said it worked better than 409!

Snake oil - Avoid!

Not completely, Most water is oxygenated or more accurately “aerated” with additional oxygen molecules saturated into the liquid not unlike CO2 in a carbonated beverage.
If you exhale CO2 over a glass of water you aren’t making carbonated water, it requires pressurized gas to saturate it. However at the molecular level it’s still water. DE oxygenated water is water that has been stripped of usable free oxygen. Fish still require oxygen but their bodies are not designed to break down a water molecule and expel the remaining unused hydrogen. Hence the reason fish tanks have aerator pumps blowing bubbles through them all the time. Without constant exposure to oxygen the water loses it’s content of free BREATHABLE oxygen and the fish die. Deoxygenated water is called stagnant and you can taste the difference between a glass of water that’s been allowed to sit for a day and a glass that’s been poured into another glass and allowed to splash and bubble a bit in the process.

Aside from that, deionized water sounds like a scam, about as valid scientifically as homeopathic remedies.

I guess many people can say the exact same thing about pheromones

Oxidizing is also the substance gaining the electrons in a redox reaction (thereby making it the negatively charge “ionized” water), or if it is “deoxidized” it would be positively charged.
Unfortunately, science is a bitch and not everything sounds like what it means.

It’s funny because the product will actually work to some degree (the degree being approximately the same degree that water from your tap will work… which is relatively well)

So people buy and due to confirmation bias begin to believe the product claims

Actually water is a surprisingly effective solvent in itself and its power increases with its purity. This seems to be a lot of salemanship to get you to buy water at, probably, an inflated price but don’t underestimate the power of water, especially pure water.

I drink a gallon of distilled water daily! It’s that good

I was told too much distilled water will leach minerals from your body.:open_mouth:

That’s old news Jim and outdated. Most nutrients come from food now

Huh?? Distilled water removes minerals from bones and teeth.

Yeah I’m puzzled by that statement myself. Care to explain that to us a little further Steve? How drinkable is distilled water anyway?
