OK so I’m developing a little bit of a curiosity and am thinking about trying my hand at making some home made colognes;
I have some idea’s for home batches of colognes inspired by existing colognes, and certain Axe/Old spice type products. Possibly phero infused (with AD mones only of course). And I had a few questions.
1.) What brands/companies make the best essential oils for cologne/perfume use? I want a good quality finished product with staying power so I don’t want cheap ingredients.
2.) I read that glycerin can be used to increase a homemade colognes longevity. Would that effect either the diffusion or health of any mones in the product.
3.) I’ve been checking various sites and I assumed that certain scents would naturally be top notes or bottom notes etc due to the molecular weight of the scent molecule. But I’ve found some things will list a certain scent as a top note, and some places will list the same scent as a middle note etc. Is there another factor I’m missing that could be effecting what kind of note a certain scent becomes? Does this mean I have way of choosing if I want a particular scent to be top, middle or base note?
4.) if I want my finished product to be mone infused should I
A.) buy the mones in a low quanitity (say buy 5ml of None at X strength and simply divide the potency by 6 for calculations…counting the liquid as my dilutent?
Or
B.) by extremely high concentrations, add single drops and then use unscented PA or Vodka for my dilutent?
It really depends on what you’re looking for. Of course, I can’t list our sources for various reasons (incld. that some of them may be private suppliers or also because we don’t use one source all of the time) but I would always ask for samples. Many people don’t know this but almost any legitimate supplier will send you a sample. If they don’t offer samples - move along.
Are you referring to DPG? Glycerin can be used if you’re making a soap or something but I think in this situation you’d want Dipropyleneglycol. It shouldn’t affect the health of any product but will certainly change the diffusion pattern. Its oil/grease so basically it will change the diffusion temperature and consistency. It WILL also affect how it comes out of an atomizer if you add too much. It could basically separate from the alcohol.
One factor can be the strength or ‘chemical makeup’. Something that normally is a bottom note can become a top note if its a stronger concentration. It also depends on the person who is smelling it. We’ve seen people here who say “Ammo/TUTH/A314 smells like body odor! Yuck!” thats because they are sensitive to the androstenone. Some people will say “Ammo/TUTH smell so fresh and clean!” or “A314 smells so suave!” thats because they are smelling everything - which is a majority of the population. Very few people on this planet have trained (or naturally strong) senses of smell. I guess unless they grew up in the rainforest or something.
Possibly? I’d say you can step down the concentration by changing how much you add. Not sure to be honest. I have only really made a few of my own scent packages at AD on an experimental basis and haven’t really messed with tweaking it to that level. When I did, I just changed how much I add of a scent.
You know I’m going to say to layer them right?
That aside - you have to make sure you account for everything including what diluent is already there. But seriously, you should just layer so you can control your custom fragrance in its own diluent. It really will be the best way. I would do bottom layer fragrance, top layer mones though - just for the halibut.
I wouldn’t use vodka. I mean I guess you could. But you don’t know what else is in there that could be harming the mones - plus the diffusion would be much lower. Although maybe you’re onto something with fragrance and cologne infused vodka - if you get sloppy drunk and spill it on yourself the women wont smell the alcohol on you.
All of that aside, enjoy making your own scent - the best part is that you can really just make it for you and make it special.
Well I use 100% therapeutic grade oils because I use them for tinctures as well as for perfumes. These are of the purist quality because you can ingest them. They smell a bit stronger then fragrance grade because they are more concentrated.
It shouldn’t harm the pheromone but it will effect diffusion. I would opt for
DPG myself or Cyclopentasiloxane which will increase longevity because of its molecular structure.
Well that go’s to the EO’s natural longevity. Some EO’s diffuse faster then others. Those that diffuse quickly can be used as a top or middle note and those that diffuse slow can be used in all three.
This should help …
I use my aromatherapy books when picking my notes though or just use some online charts.
C Buy mones in dry form, dissolve in DPG and add to scent.
If you buy them from AD then your going for a much higher expensive concentration because the EO’s and the carrier you choose will dilute them down. You have to figure out the dosage you want of each mone per spray. Take into consideration the size of the bottle and the ratio of perfume to mones.
For instance if you use a 30 ml bottle and fill it up 29 ml with perfume and use 1 ml of 100 mcg per spray anone which is a total of 20000 mcg’s per bottle. Thats 667 per 1 ML which when added to your 29 ml perfume makes 3.33 mcgs of anone per spray. It can get expensive this way unless you buy it in chem set form.
If your willing to spend the money on the higher MCG’s of mones here thats fine its just something to consider.
Thats why I make the perfume and then just layer on top of mones. Its more cost effective for me. If I need to take a small bottle with me I just do the same thing I do when I make up my mones in one bottle.
Spray my dosage of mones for one application right into the to-go and squirt the perfume in it as well.
I wouldn’t use vodka either. You live in the USA and perfumers alcohol is easy enough to get for you. Vodka is for times of desperation when you need to be MacGyver thats it LOL
Tisha covered pretty much all the sites I get my stuff from already. Small world .
One additional suggestion would be to search soap making supplies as they will have everything you need as far as mixing goes. Its a very arduous and slow process, but fun when you get it together. I personally like a combo of pepper, nutmeg with just a hint of vanilla. Drives the ladies crazy
