I’m new, just joined today and made some purchases.
I have a question to readers:
Apart from the pharmaceutical aromas here, what are the scents/smells that from your life that you wish they could reproduce in a bottle?
These are the smells that you have distant vague memories of, that intoxicated / obsessed you and your yearn to smell again.
For me, there are two clear highlight smells that I wish could be captured and stored for me in a bottle: First). When I was about 6 or 7 years old, we lived near the beach.
A family would bring their two sons to the beach each day. Roger was about 10-11 and had dark looks, his brother was Andrew about 11 with fair/ginger looks.
I remember as a 6 year old kid that I would go to speak with Roger and even press my nose against his chest just to smell the wonderful scent of his skin. It was that sun kissed, slightly salty, tanned (but not sun screen) scent.
Second). Then at school when I was 15-16 there was a guy there who always smelled strongly, I think he washed daily but just smelt naturally strong. He took the same carpentry class as me. And when he walked by he would leave this cloud/trail of body scent. It was absolutely intoxicating; I would take deep breaths to get as much in as possible. God, if they could bottle that it would make any gay man weak at the knees!
So actually I now have two questions for the forum:
1). What scents do you yearn for and hope will be bottle one day?
Thanks Copycat. You are right there is something special about the smell of play-doh, it’s almost edible!
Well after some quick research, I’ve now discovered the technology to recreate my scents. It’s this machine called “Headspace”, see wiki’s explanation. Headspace technology - Wikipedia
Now all I need to do is track the two guys down and persuade them to sit naked inside a glass domes whilst the machine sniffs them, analyses their scent and then provides the aroma recipe to reproduce each.
Apart from the challenge of tracking them down and persuading them to do this, the real problem is that they will both be in their 40’s now…so maybe they won’t be smelling as good ?
I need a machine that will analyse my memory of their scent and then produce that!

Me too! Play-Doh cologne? DO WANT.
seriously. I’m getting some lol… reps to you Copycat for pointing that out.
And… yeah, all the business about the olfactory sense having, I think, a direct line to the emotional centers of the brain, unmediated by any cerebral shenanigans, applies here. Basically, smell-associations are awesomely powerful.
Wow, that won’t break the bank - a few quid in the UK. Thanks Gone. Reps to you too. This thread rules! I’ll check my pharmacy to see if they have any of that stuff.
I think vanilla is a component in Play Doh or something…? It’s something quite unusual anyway, and hopefully the sort of thing that some women would say “oh, what’s that?” to which I could say “Oh lean in and take a closer smell”… and (sotto voce) “get a good, up-close blast of my pheros while you’re at it, MUAHAHAHA!!”

oh man if i could have full time access to the smell of the norwegian waffles my grandmother used to make featuring the spice cardamom, i don’t think i would ever get any work done.
Oh, and after we perfect the smell-o-memory analyzer, can we work on the dreamorator? Sometimes I want to record my better dreams so I can watch 'em again whenever I want!!!
We laugh, but some day… perhaps in the not-too-distant future…
My computer is too slow - the play doh link won’t work for me.
Has anyone here tried Demeter Fragrances? Link. I’ve been wanting to sample their fragrance vials for a while now.
They’ve got ‘Dirt’, ‘Baby Powder’, ‘Play Doh’ (was this the same one as mentioned in link?), ‘Rain’, ‘Snow’, ‘Paint’, even ‘Condensed Milk’, ‘Celery’ and ‘Glue’.
Copycat - hehehehe i love the website! The variety is mind-boggling! Too bad Australia only stocks the more popular fragrances in specialty outlet stores. I think there’s a thread on Demeter fragrances under the Parfum section of pherotalk. Also, i was so tempted to buy Marc Jacobs’ new line of fragrances (cologne) - link here.
Basil - green + musky
Pear - amber + wood, hint of pear skin + fruit
Grapefruit - dewy pink grapefruit
I would say the smell of my grandmother. Her smell was a cross between jeanette (I know I spelled that wrong but it was a lemon body splash popular in the 50’s and 60’s ) and she always wore lavender with it. All of us kids remember the smell and none of us can duplicate it. All of us recognize it the second you smell it to. Once in a while, at a family function out of nowhere that smell will waft in so strongly that we all acknowledge it and we all know she is still with us.
I also love the smell of the farm, Not the stinky manure part LOL Running around in the fields barefoot, in spring and smelling the grass and hay mixed with all those lovely spring scents. I just love that. LP is great at recreating that smell. I love the smell of the outdoors (in the country) I even like the smell of dirt LOL
Yes indeed. There’s nothing quite like the sensory input one gets out on the farm on a chilly spring morning, when stepping one’s cold bare feet into a wam cowpie.
