I’ve recently started to enjoy the scent of -none.
As a paean to the transience of olfactory memory, I now cannot remember how -none smelled to me before this change to a positive appreciation, though I remember there were some salient features that I disliked.
Only a couple of weeks ago.
Any insights? Theories? Weak speculations / tenuous correlations?
I don’t remember having a sensory reversal of this sort since I was … perhaps eight or nine. Before then, I hated the taste of hot dogs and ate only OM ‘smokie links’, but after could not stomach a ‘smokie link’ and enjoyed hot dogs. At about the same time I switched the liking and loathing attributes of Kraft Miracle Whip and Hellman’s Mayonnaise.
I think that our amazingly intelligent bodies change to our external stimuli. Just like how some bacteria become penicillin resistant.
My (high school) $.02.
I did the same thing about the same age over OM “liver cheese” and french’s mustard. About age forty I started liking mustard again. The liver cheese not so much. Actually I’ve noticed quite a few of these reversals over the years. At about fourteen I LOVED the Bay City Rollers, Now I prefer Chopin ,Verdi, and Meatloaf, well, still Meatloaf. I’m being a bit facile but quite serious. I think that with exposure to and deprivation from certain stimuli we change our tastes over time. I don’t know why the aroma of pheromones esp. those we associate with good times would be any different. Bleu cheese is, for most, an acquired taste. My personal opinion is that Miracle Whip sucks always has always will. My dad loves it. He got me to love Chopin, but not Miracle Whip. Tastes just change sometimes.
I don’t like the smell of androstenone. Reminds me of armpit and pee. However when mixed just right with certain colognes it actually improves the scent of the cologne.
MarkL - If you like the smell of -none, you’ll love this…try hitting the gym for a nice sweaty workout while wearing loads of -none and you’ll REALLY be in hog heaven.
Perhaps we start to tune into smells we don’t encounter much in today’s washed society.
If all previous associations with none had been urine-soaked bums on skid row, perhaps the ability to develop some new associations helped to change the perception of the smell.
I have smelt alot of none products. I dont wear alot though but I think Tuth smells yummy.
Now this is a little out there but think of how animals mark there territory with other males. Maybe its supposed to sort of smell like armpit and Pee to other males until it meshes with your own natural none. Just a thought
Also I think I smell the different -none products differently, like Pure Instinct, Ammo and TUTH… perhaps I just don’t pick it up as a smell. Only its effect on me..
Very true, i can smell my own NONE and it smells great. I hate the TUTH none, it makes me VERY nervous and pissed off these days. It also makes it difficult for me to think.
I had always suspected that not all nones are created equal, just as a sperm cell is completely different from man to man but under a regular microscope, looks the same. I believe that every man has a different none.
Human males are the same. They never flush in public restrooms as they instinctively need to leave their mark. And men urinate in public places all the time. They especially love to mark territory around their fav bars and clubs. Mothers have to work especially hard to train their sons to flush at home, but they’re fighting against nature.
Incidentally, male urine is rich in androstenone. However I’ve heard male cat and pig urine has a much higher concentration than human tinkle.
Androstenone is chemically the same in all male animals including humans. Androstenone is exactly the same from man to man. What differs is the amount produced, the mix/ratio with other natural pheromones, amount and type of skin bacteria that acts upon it and other aspects of sweat content related to heredity and diet.
Androstadienone is the most common natural mone on male skin, not androstenone. Oddly enough if you wait long enough bacteria will break it down to androstenol and finally to androstenone. So go a week without a shower and you’ll be a natural fount of TUTH as well as a true funk master deluxe.
Really, the homeless guys who don’t bathe don’t smell anything like -none. That homeless perfume comes in two varieties … the regular “bacteria have shat all over me” unbathed variation, and the “I am a homeless schizophrenic” no-amount-of-soap-makes-me-smell-better sort.
Every psych doctor I’ve met has admitted that psychotics, especially schizophrenics, have a distinctive odor. I’ve asked a few times why no one researches this, but have never gotten an answer.
Mark, I believe what you are talking about is the odor coming from trans-3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid (MHA). From my research, this has been studied since at least the 1960s as being associated in with the smell of Schizophrenics’ sweat. On the other hand the studies seem to have stopped in the 1970s only to reappear with the recent Australian study mentioned in the first link below: Schizophrenia Daily News Blog: Chemical in Sweat and Inability to Smell it May be Schizophrenia Marker
I remember going to an old teacher for private lessons when I was a kid.
His house used to have a smell of ‘old’ something - don’t know what it was and I never smelt it elsewhere.. it wasn’t nice, that’s what I thought. To me it meant old.
The smell of death and/or unhealthy? Not all old folks have it but I know the scent. CNN recently mentioned a cat in a nursing home that knew when someone was about to die, within a couple hours, and would sit in their room waiting for them to buy the farm.
