For the longest time, I was an anti-perspiration user. A few years ago, I was reading more and more articles that suggest that any anti-perspirant that contains aluminum could be linked to disease.
So I went a year without really using anything, and never had any problems. (Wifey says I have a naturally pleasant aroma.)
Recently, I wanted to smell a bit fresher so I started using Tom’s “All Natural” deodorant.
Just wondering… What do you use to keep the stinkies at bay?
I use salt. I have a non-aluminum salt crystal that has seemingly lasted forever… three years now, and barely a scratch.
I also noticed that my store brand stick is made of scent, color, gelling agent, and… salt. Sodium chloride, in this case.
So screw it, I just use my crystal. Less garbage, less expense, more incentive to shower (since it only woks if you’re clean) and it’s safe and non-sticky. But it’s not an anti-perspirant! (That’s where the alum comes in.)
For the record, anti-perspirant caused me to need a minor surgery, too, by causing a boil on my armpit that had to be lanced… and when I say had to be lanced, I mean, it was so far under the skin that I couldn’t get it to rupture, and the infection was spreading to the rest of my body and had I not had the surgery, I’d have likely ended up dead or close to it.
Salt as in “crystal deodorant”. It’s not table salt in my crystal deodorant, but it’s not an aluminum salt, either, as is the alum they use to make anti-perspirants. Not hard to find in most supermarkets, either. Lasts forever…
The el-cheapo deodorant uses a strong scent and table salt. Since your sweat has that kind of salt in it, I would imagine it would not be as effective as this other sort.
Most deodorant/perspiring products make me break out and suffer.
I take one of those empty cobalt blue 30ml bottles and fill it most of the way with 198 proof grain alcohol and add just a little fragrance and spray the pits directly. I’ve had pretty good luck with it. There’s no alcohol smell when it’s dry.
I think the alcohol kills the stink manufacturing bacteria and it takes awhile for them to invade the territory again. If I have to, later in the day I’ll do it again using a tissue to wipe it clean.
Thankfully, I’m not a very stinky girl but if I feel the need on a particularly hot/humid day I’ll roll-on some liquid crystal deodorant. It’s also available in spray for those who’d prefer that method of application to the stone or stick which must be wet before applying. All are great, I just like to roll.
