Well, it appears some things don’t change much. Almost exactly six years ago, we wrote about a study that said that men tend to use mobile phones in the same way that peacocks display their plumage: as a mating call to try to impress women. A new study has found that this still happens. Men are much more likely to actively display their mobile phones in social situations. The article suggests it’s a way to pick up women, but it also notes that men are just as eager to display their mobile phones to other men to make themselves appear more important. Of course, what makes this even more interesting is the study we saw this past summer that found that women use mobile phones for almost the exact opposite purpose. They do it to keep men from approaching them. That is, if they see someone approaching them, they may pull out the phone so they have an excuse to avoid talking to the man. No wonder the sexes have so much trouble communicating. They don’t even use communication devices the same way.
I use a very big PDA phone and always try hide it in public, I dont agree with this article, most guys that I know keep thier phones hidden when in a social setting, playing around with your phone (when you actually dont need too use the phone to make a call or sms, and even then I do that very discreetly) around people is rude and not very polite, and if anything displays insecurity or boredom.
the article says its a way to pick up women??? yeah…maybe if you smother the phone in pheromones.
“WOW, look, SEE… I can afford a phone, and people actually like me enough to talk to me!”
Here I am trying to make fun of it, but maybe this does work? Not like cigarettes, like the article talks about, but women do like to see that you have friends. They don’t like creepy loners. Maybe a phone serves more as a friend substitute, sort of like you’re showing off that you have friends, not so much that you have a cool phone?
I’m always on my phone. Freaking thing rings off the hook. I never thought of it as anything other than a phone.
Although back when cell phones became popular in the early 90’s (I’m old) I did go out and buy one just so I could look cool. It’s hilarious now that I think how ridiculous it was but I used to ask my friends to call me at a certain time because I knew I would be in a social setting and people would take notice of the cell phone guy. COOL!
The sad thing is lots of guys–especially young men–actually think owning and flashing a trendy moblie device wins them social points. Somehow a $700 phone helps validate them. They even take it out in public places to finger 'n stroke when they have no intention of making a call or text. Meanwhile they still need to learn to clean under their nails and practice regular oral hygiene. They imagine a hot babe thinking: “Dat guy wiz butt breath 'n filty nails has such a cool cell. Ah wants ta have his lovechild.”
i saw a test once, where this actor was on a few dates with different girls, they all thought it was real, but thing is, half of the dates he was acting really nice and friendly towards the girls, and half of them he spent more time talking to friends on his cell phone then he did talking to the girls, strangly, the dates where he was talking to the girls, the girls generel opinion was that it went ok, not good not bad, just ok.
The dates where he was spending more time talking to friends on the phone then he was talking to the girl, the girls generel opinion was that the date went great.
I’m a gadget girl if its a smart phone maybe although chances are I’m gona run off with it the first chance i get to surf the web. lol
But yah two things about that belt phone.
Girls tend to feel safer with their phones handy. Most criminals don’t like the idea of someone who has their phone out.(they have cellphone tasers too btw)
I warded off a guy that was following me for five very dark blocks with my phone.
I’ve been in enough nasty situations to say that I’m sure if I had not of had the phone I would have been majorly screwed.
Oh and the guy that took me out that night and left me a bit far from my bus stop never got another chance.
My roomate who is now my guy walked all the way out to meet me and walk me home.
But I seriously had to tell this guy my phone had gps enabled and I was going to call the cops if he didn’t fuck off.
Although when me and my gf were out together and some other guy pulled the same dark alley gropey grabby crap I got in his face and was ready to dismantle him.I told him “Right now I’m torn between two options I could use my phone and call the cops if you don’t take a hike or I can kick your ass and right now I’m leaning towards kicking your ass.”
He apologized and hustled out of there.
Lol I’ve taken my phone to clubs to be left alone by drunk guys before its actually rather effective. That and so I don’t get bored if the dj sucks and its a slow night but my friends want to stay.I tend to get hit on by a lot of gadget guys though. Er.. I guess my phone is sexy too? lol
Atta-girl!
Don’t back down, don’t show any fear and you’ll get out of that type of scrape almost every time. Most of those guys are looking for a meek victim who won’t fight back.
Texting is really super big in New Zealand. We text more than we call because our calling plans are so crappy.
Anyway, I try not to take my phone out - though I have nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s small, but it works fine, and when it’s fully extended - its about the same size as a normal phone.
I mainly use it for texting. And if I’m taking a poop anywhere that isn’t home - I play sudoku.
