There are actually quite a few colognes that smell very good on there. I don’t have experience with the ones you asked about but I personally like
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (my favorite)
Cool Water Game
Aqua Di Gio
Nautica Competition
Sandalwood Classic (just plain sandalwood scent but I get TONS of complements on it- could just be the pheros I’ve boosted it with )
I know that DJ had a ton of Common Scents reviews in his journal.
The Sandalwood Classic is actually under ‘Traditional and Exotic Oils’.
I liked the Nautica Competition, I’ve never smelled the original but this one smells pretty fresh and clean. I got complements from younger women when I’d wear it.
I may try a few of these. From my understanding, they get a mass spectrometer and “shoot” the perfume to read what components are in the juice. They match up 99% of the ingredients, however if there are any natural components in the perfume it’s hard to get a perfect match. Natural components can be incredibly complex in structure. 1 natural rose scent may have 100+ molecules, compared to one in a synthetic. From the book The Perfect Scent
A good tip for you would be to go to a dept store, try everything, find out what you like, get a sampler if possible and bring it home. Then order that scent on common scents if they have it. That way you get a scent you like and can compare with the original.
I just recently discovered Creed Imperial Type from The Common Scents. It is an oil based version of Creed Millésime Impérial and of course the original is by far the best but this does a GREAT job of covering the Neroli scent. It is a very citrus-y scent that I am looking forward to wearing in the Summer. The sillage on this is fair to midland but it smells so good that you might wear it just because you like it. I actually would consider this to be more of a unisex scent.
I also got a new one that they just added to their offerings there. I LOVE vetiver colognes so I was very happy to see that they added Lanvin Vetiver. If you are a fan of soapier Vetiver scents, this is one you might like. It is actually a pretty good reproduction of the original (they are really getting better at replicating scents). I was happily surprised to have more than one compliment on this cologne (even being phero free). Some of the scents from The Common Scents have better sillage than others. This one is actually pretty good (the best I’ve found from there is their Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille Type). If you have tried both Guerlain’s Vetiver and Original Vetiver, this one fall in between on the soapiness scale. Dirtier than OV but more soap than the Guerlain Vetiver. I’ve had it on for over 5 hours today and I can still smell it when I sniff the application points.
Very Irresistable for Men Type is another one I’ve recently been using as a cover for my oil based composites and I really like the smell of this. It smells almost identical to the original and is also pretty good at diffusing the pheros into the room. I also like the smell so it helps.
One that smells (at least to me) identical to the original is Le Male Type. If you like JPG Le Male, you will probably like this one. I know a lot of guys who are on the fence about this scent but I know a lot of women who love it. It also covers the phero funk quite well so that is an added bonus.
The nautica colognes smell very good, the Greed Irish Tweed is a bit strong but smells just like creed Green Irish Tweed, I usually use it for a cover scent for NPA.
I bought like 45 dollars worth of roll on cologne from there and have not been disappointed
Well I took your advice and ordered some sugar I also got L’Homme by YSL and Fierce by Ambercrombie. I think these will make good mixes with pink sugar.
Nope, good question. Most guys will layer the oil based scent with the pheros sprayed over them. Let your nose be your guide as to how much cologne oil to apply.
You can combine the pheros and oil into a composite (everything in one bottle) but it takes a lot of time and effort (worth it to me but not for everyone). Oil Based Composites- What I've learned
For me personally, the roll ons work better (same with pheros) because they last a lot longer for me. Something about my chemistry seems to take care of any spray much more quickly than I’d like.
Really the best way to make your scent seem not so clone-ish and unique is to combine two or more scents. Break up you occasions into 4 categories.
Warm/Summer Daytime/Work mix
Warm/Summer Nighttime/Club/Party Mix
Cold/Winter Daytime/Work Mix
And Cold/Winter Nighttime/Party Mix
For a defined signature scent choose one cologne as your constant base and always use at least one spray of that…this way no matter what else you wear there is an element to it that is unmistakeably you. This is the part that makes women love wearing your shirts the morning after.
Personally for that, I use John Varvatos as I find the elements of tobacco, leather and coffee to give it a very masculine scent.
So for a summer/daytime mix I’ll use a single spray of Varvatos with a single spray of Abercrombie Fierce and then a couple of sprays of Cool Water.
CW is a pretty played out fragrance when used as a standalone and will usually be identified immediately by a woman that bought it for her brother or boyfriend, but the sharp citrus of Fierce and the muskier aspects of Varvatos lend something to it that makes it still a very unobtrusive and work safe scent but much more interesting than Cool Water alone could ever be.
You could make numerous combinations simply by playing with the ratio’s of two or three colognes that give each combo a unique flavor but since the elements are the same (especially your base scent) then they all have an aspect that becomes associated with you.
So much so that I’ve had women tell me that they couldn’t help but think of me as their morning coffee was brewing, or when they go shopping for a bag and get a sniff of new leather items, even the smell inside a humidor of a cigar shop has made women remember me. That’s the Varvatos
