As the weather is cooling down here, I decided to dust off a nice winter fragrance for a few wears. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. Been wearing it the last two days and have gotten about 4 compliments on it. I’ve got Denec to thank for suggesting it a couple of years ago.
Tobacco Vanille is my go to winter scent also. Great for work. Even men like it. Good throw and the vanilla bassnote lasts. Great stuff! (Thanks Denec!) Got me to try some of the other Tom Ford stuff but nothing clicked.
Dirty English is now my casual standard. It just seems easy to wear. Fits with a relaxed attitude.
Still with the old black Armani Code for formal wear, but the bottle is almost empty, and none of the new Code smells like this, so I guess I’ll soon have to do something different.
I have kind of a unique situation in that my house was just few miles downwind from several weeks of brushfires so everything I own smells like grass/mesquite/cedar smoke. As a result, I’ve gone to the leather scents. I used to think they were to ‘tough’ for me, but then again… I’m not the nice guy that I used to be. The best of them seems to be an oud from Montale, “Cuir D’Arabie”, arabic leather. A stout brew. Real leather. you’ve got to be ready to carry this one with attitude. And like good ouds, it lasts all day. A little less intimidating, but still solid leather, is an attar from Dominique Dubrana called “Cuio Tartaro”. Organic pheromones of beaver and civet.
Now what was that about the attraction power of perfumes being bunk?
Dirty English is Amazing no Joke. My favorite scent for a cover up scent. It gets me so many compliments, I also have the after shave to match it. Chrome is a Great Scent too. Raw Vanilla is great too. Idk who makes it but it smells amazing. I also love my Gucci Envy. Armani Code is good too. I only wear that one every now and then. But I love Dirty English by far the most. I have been told I smell like sex lol. Everyone I ask says its way better then the abercrombie scents,Hollister and AE. Best thing is it is not sold in department stores. So not many people got it compared to the smell Macy Colognes and abercrombie smells.
Dirty English is my girl’s favourite cologne on me..
so it’s my new standard too.. it goes well with my pheromones.
way back when i was younger like 14 15 ish i used a cologne from avon called mesmerize and when i sprayed it it drove my friends hot sister insane with with wanting to sniff me like within a couple inches of me and i liked it and coulda had a chance but it started to get complicated
Voted. “Other.”
I’ve had plenty of success with Wild Country by Avon. It’s fairly common, ALOT of 80’s fathers wore it. (hehehe… bonus points if you know why I pointed that out)
It smells a bit like baby powder, but to a womans nose it’s musk is a bit more pronounced. Have and use the whole Wild Country line.
I used to swear by aqua di gio, untill my most recent gf. We went out one night and she referenced that her ex wore aqua di gio and I smelled like him. So the last thing I wanted to do was remind her of her ex everytime I was with her. I went to a department store and talked with the sales girl. I explained my situation and she helped me pick out a new cologne. I ended up buying CK FREE, and honestly I like it more than gio, and so does she. Everytime I’m wearing it and she gets a wiff, she buries her head inmy chest, wraps her arms around me and take a huge deap breath and compliments me on how good I smell. This makes me feel amazzing of coarse.
I always get the best results from colognes that I love personally, despite being a bit unconventional smelling. I believe you will get better results wearing a cologne that you love personally, putting you in a good mood and maybe a bit of confidence, than a cologne that you picked out specifically because you think ladies will love the smell and be attracted to you.
i have tried Abercrombie Fierce with good results. Even better results with Chrome. VerySexy for men got good reviews as well too.
I’ve been wearing Kenneth Cole Vintage Black lately. Its on the lower end of the cost scale, but I’ve got several compliments on it. It has citrus, sandalwood and rum notes to it (unspiced rum).
I’ve been interested in making my own cologne for a while now though. If I did it I’d want the main note to be cedar (cedar has got to be my favorite smell) backed up by cucumber, colone and unsmoked maduro cigars. Throw in brandy if it won’t make it too busy.
Probably sounds weird, but to me it sounds awesome.
I think that sounds pretty good Apoplectic. One thing you could try: Iso E Super instead of Cedar natural oil. A lot of people say it smells like cedar, and it’s got the bonus of massive sillage, never ending duration (couldnt think of a better word), and seems to be a rather transparent smell. As in, “it’s there, but it’s not there, but I definitely smell it, but yet it seems to have an ethereal quality”. Chick magnet! ![]()
I made the mistake of buying Blue Sugar! :o
The very next day, I ran to the Pet Shop to buy me a muzzle to keep from chewing off my wrists where I applied the sprays!!!
LOVE IT!!!
I can’t remember the WHO, but WHOever you are that recommended this cologne, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! ![]()
M&M you forgot me. I am shocked and dismayed. Guess I will have to start posting more (snort) JK Your welcome by the way.
Tisha
No, my love. I could never forget you. 'Cause I’d bet you were AH-SUM at birth, and didn’t just grow into it! inserts GET OUT JAIL FREE card, and blames it on AGING
THANK YOU, darrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrling!
I am a BLUE SUGAR believer!!!
Does anyone of you cologne-aholics own both, Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford and Blue Sugar? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on their scents. I own Blue Sugar, and I’ll own it for LIFE! ![]()
Wanting to make room for one more, and Tom sounds like he may have come up with something I’d be interested in. Anyone?
Thanks now, and Thanks later! ![]()
Tish, darrrrrling — Have you by any chance put your nose in the mist of Tobacco Vanille’s scent? IF you have, and can remember, your thoughts, pleaseeee.
Thank you, too!
Just to say that there is an Ebay seller doing Blue Sugar fre an excellent price just now:
Aquolina Blue Sugar 50ml 1.7 oz Perfume for men Eau De Toilette | eBay
I laid-in another bottle and it did arrive very quickly, although it was posted from Hungary, not Oxford!
I recently bought a bottle of Versace “The Dreamer”, and man oh man, when I first sprayed it, the opening notes made me use more expletives than I should have. Hated it, but it grew into a beautiful masculine scent (yep, a beautiful masculine scent). The scent was well received by those around me judging by some reactions I received a couple of hours after applying.
I’ve taken a deep liking to it. The like might turn into a love.
LOVE Fahrenheit. The scent reminds me of a candy shop that’s burning down. Not that I’ve ever smelled a candy shop that’s burning to the ground or witnessed anything like it, but if I were involved in such a scenario, I imagine that I’d smell Fahrenheit.
I like AMen Pure Malt, but it hardly projects on my skin (asked others within 2 hours of applying). I know it isn’t a fake because I ordered straight off the Mugler website. I like it, but won’t be buying another bottle because of its mediocre lasting power on my dry skin. Conversely, I love the original AMen and it’s a beast that shouldn’t be played around with.
I really like Dirty English, too, but again, it doesn’t last (on me and my dry skin) or project.
I’m not trying to dominate everybody’s nasal cavities or anything, but it’s crazy when a person practically has to put their nose on my skin, full contact, to smell a fragrance.
Bought a bottle of Givenchy Play Intense. Like it, too. Reminds me of a darker Rochas Man, which I also like a lot (but Rochas hardly projects…)
I love gourmands, as you might have been able to tell. Got a bottle of Blue Sugar (saw it being hyped up there!
) that I’m going to try out soon!
Givenchy P i might be one of my all-time favorites. Hell, I’m going to go ahead and say it is. Have a bottle of Le Male, and I like it a bit but it’s definitely not one of my favorites nor do I wear it often (Just once in a blue moon).
Picked up a bottle of Black XS a while ago. I kind of regret it. Blind bought it (just like I always seem to do), and it’s just iffy to me. The extreme strawberry note is ridiculous, but I’ll give it a few more chances.
Creed Aventus covering mones is a winning combination, I’ve found.
Mambo by Liz Clairborne is a winner, so is Escada Magnetism. Recently Got blue sugar and my god it is amazing.
Updating! ![]()
I wrote a post in this thread a couple of months ago (not too many posts above) and mentioned Blue Sugar and how I was going to try it out soon. Tried it out, and wow, it’s awesome. Very awesome. PERFECT for the winter weather. I actually wore it on Christmas and received a compliment.
So thumbs up to M&M and Tisha. And everybody else that has touted Blue Sugar.
One caveat, though, or a fact (whatever!): there was a rather warm day in January that I put this on, and well, I’m never doing that again on slightly warmer days (it was almost in the 60s). Too warm, too cloying. I should have realized that, but it had been a few weeks since I’d wore it, and I forgot about the projection of this stuff. For an amazingly priced fragrance, the projection and lasting power blows my mind.
I also tested out Aventus as I got in on a split. I’m not sure if it’s as controversial of a fragrance here as it’s on Basenotes and other fragrance sites, BUT I LOVE it. For personal reasons and for the scent itself. For some reason, it reminds me of my dad. I have the E01 batch, by the way, which features the perfect blend of the pineapple and smokey-esque ash. My dad owned a business that sold mining parts, and oftentimes when I was a kid, I’d go to work with him. I loved my father, and always looked up to him, wanted to be around him all the time. I remember when he’d come in from work and I’d hug him. Aventus captures those memories so well. He passed away in December 2003, so with that and the smell of the fragrance alone probably makes this my #1.
I will probably end up buying a bottle of Aventus in a couple of months. But when it comes to niche fragrances, I would rather buy decants or get in on splits. I’m a collector of the juice, the fragrances themselves, rather than the bottles. Why spend $300 dollars on a fragrance when I can get the SAME EXACT juice in a 50ml/1.7oz bottle for $70-80??? It’s much more cost effective. And besides, I don’t even get a chance to look at my bottles of fragrances, anyway. They are either in their boxes OR in drawers, so they aren’t out on display for anyone to see. So a fragrance’s actual bottle means nothing to me if I can get the same juice in a decanted generic bottle.
Regarding the paragraph above: does anyone else see where I’m coming from? Agree? Disagree? Like I said, I don’t care about collecting bottles – I consider myself, again, as a collector of the actual fragrance itself rather than a bottle, but maybe my logic is flawed.
Got in on a split of Tobacco Vanille and waiting for it to come in, in a few days. Somebody on a YouTube video’s comments said that Tobacco Vanille shouldn’t be bought from a ‘cheap, generic glass bottle’ which made me laugh. Same exact juice at a better price? I’ll take $74 for 1 ounce of Tobacco Vanille in a ‘cheap, generic glass bottle’ over $225 for 1.7 ounces in a ‘classy’ bottle that I’d hardly ever, ever look at except for days I’d use the fragrance, anyway. If you are a complete collector of bottles and have them on display, I completely understand why you would want to splurge, but me? I like to wear the fragrances. Nobody else knows whether I’m spraying from a ‘cheap, generic glass’ bottle or the actual [overpriced] bottle, anyway.![]()
